VCE ATAR lower than expected? Your options and pathways (2026 to 2027)

First 48 hours: what should I do?

1. Breathe, then read your results properly. Understanding your VCE results explains each number.
2. Check your preferences against selection ranks, not just ATARs. VTAC's advice is to still list your ideal courses, because last year's lowest selection rank may not be this year's and many courses consider more than the ATAR.
3. Add at least one pathway course below your ideal courses. If you get a pathway offer, VTAC still considers you for higher preferences in later rounds when places come up.
4. Call the institutions. VTAC's guide says to contact institutions about alternative pathways. RMIT, for example, says its advisers work extended hours during the change of preference period.

The full timeline is in VCE results day, offers and preferences. In short: the December round is on 23 December, January round 1 on 12 January 2027, January round 2 on 27 January and the February rounds on 3, 9 and 16 February.

ATAR vs selection rank

Your selection rank is your ATAR after adjustments for a particular course. VTAC describes two main kinds:

• Subject adjustment points, which some institutions give for particular VCE studies. VTAC applies them to your aggregate, and its subject adjustment tool estimates your selection rank.
• Equity scheme adjustments, if you applied for VTAC's equity schemes. Applications for 2027 entry close at 5 pm on Friday 9 October 2026. See VCE special provision and VTAC equity schemes.

Pathway programs at Victorian institutions

These are drawn from VTAC's pathways page and the institutions' own information. Always confirm current entry rules with the institution.

VTAC also notes that some diplomas can give you credit for the first year of a degree, and that pathways are often called Foundation, Undergraduate Certificates or Diplomas.

TAFE and VET routes

TAFE is a destination in its own right, not only a way back to uni.

• Free TAFE in Victoria covers tuition fees (not other student or materials fees) for eligible students in around 80 qualifications and short courses. Priority pathways let you move from a certificate to a diploma in the same area with both covered. Check eligibility on the Victorian Government's Free TAFE page.
• Diplomas often lead into related degrees with credit. Browse TAFE courses, for example the Diploma of Business, Diploma of Information Technology or Diploma of Nursing.
• Apprenticeships are arranged with an employer rather than through an ATAR ranking. Start with trades and preparing for an apprenticeship interview.

Mid-year entry and transferring later

• Mid-year (Semester 2) entry. Some courses take a mid-year intake, and VTAC runs mid-year applications. VTAC's mid-year offer rounds start in late June; check vtac.edu.au for 2027 mid-year application dates.
• Transferring after first year. If you start in a related course, ask the university early how internal transfers work and which grades you'd need. Your first-year university results often matter more than your ATAR at that point.

Is a gap year a good idea?

It can be, if it has a plan. If you receive an offer you're happy with, ask the institution whether you can defer it: see deferring your uni offer. Weigh it up with gap year or uni straight after? and gap year pros and cons. If you'll work, a resume for school leavers is a good start.
