What student life looks like

The Hawthorn campus is a compact urban site eight kilometres east of the Melbourne CBD, served by Glenferrie station on the Belgrave and Lilydale train lines. The Advanced Manufacturing and Design Centre, the Advanced Technologies Centre and the new George Swinburne building anchor the campus. As a dual-sector university, Swinburne teaches higher-education degrees, TAFE qualifications and short courses on the same site, with a strong vocational pathway into bachelor degrees. Further teaching sites at Wantirna (TAFE), Croydon (TAFE) and Sarawak (international) extend the footprint. Accommodation runs through Swinburne Student Residences on John Street near campus; most students commute from Melbourne's east on the Belgrave/Lilydale line. The Swinburne Student Life team and the SSAA run more than 70 clubs and the Student Hub on the Hawthorn campus is the main day-to-day services point. Swinburne pioneered the Professional Year sandwich placement model in Australia and most engineering and IT degrees include a paid 12- month industry placement option.
