ExamExplained is a free study library. This page explains, in plain English, what data we capture and when. The site is read-only and needs no account. The contact form and the waitlist involve personal data you choose to send, and the analytics and error monitoring we run are listed below. The community forum and account sign-in are currently offline. If anything is unclear, use the contact form or email privacy@examexplained.com.au.
Just reading the site
If you only read content (notes, guides, quizzes), you do not need an account and we do not set a profile or tracking cookie that identifies you. Your study state - subjects, planner, bookmarks, quiz attempts, flashcard progress, the last study page you opened - is stored in your browser's localStorage on your device and stays there. Clearing your browser data clears it. To let you keep reading without a connection, your browser also keeps offline copies of recently opened pages in its own cache on your device; they are never sent to us.
Analytics and error monitoring
We use privacy-respecting measurement to understand which topics need work and to fix bugs. On this site the following run:
- Cookieless page analytics via Plausible (where configured) and Vercel Analytics. These count page views and referrers in aggregate and do not set cookies that identify you. Vercel Analytics also counts clicks on the Better Tuition Academy referral link (which kind of page and which curriculum and subject it was shown for), anonymously and in aggregate.
- Cloudflare Web Analytics via Cloudflare, a cookieless page-view beacon loaded on every page. It records aggregate page views and performance timings, and does not use cookies or localStorage to identify you.
- Product analytics via PostHog (where configured) to see page views and which features are used. It runs on PostHog's EU cloud, is configured with memory-only persistence (nothing is written to your browser's cookies or localStorage by PostHog) and text masking, and it honours your browser's “Do Not Track” setting.
- Error monitoring via Sentry (where configured), which sends us an error report when something on the site crashes so we can fix it. Error reports include the page address and technical details of the error; session replay is not used.
We do not run third-party advertising trackers, Google Analytics, or a Facebook Pixel.
The contact form
When you choose to write to us from /get-help or a correction form, we receive the message you send. That can include your name and email (when you supply them), the subject and curriculum you select, the page you came from, and a timestamp. We store this in a private database table (not publicly readable) and send an email notification to our team so a person can reply. If you provide an email, we may also email you a copy or a reply. Email delivery uses Resend. Supplying your name and email is optional - you can leave them blank and we simply won't be able to reply directly.
The app and textbook library waitlist
If you join the waitlist, we store your email address, whether you are a student, parent, teacher or other, the curriculum and subjects you chose (both optional), the page you joined from and its campaign tags, the consent wording you agreed to, and when you signed up, confirmed and (if you do) unsubscribed. We also keep a record of which of our emails we have sent you, so we never send the same one twice. We use it only to email you your free PDFs, a short series of study emails over about four weeks (each with links to free resources on this site) and to tell you when the ExamExplained app and full textbook library are ready. You are not on the list until you confirm from the link we email you. The list is kept in a private Supabase database table and emails are sent through Resend. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops our emails straight away. You can also use the contact form or email privacy@examexplained.com.au and we will delete your details. If you are under 16, please check with a parent or guardian before you join. We do not track what you type into the form; only the details you submit are stored. We never share or sell the list.
Some pages let you ask us to email you something as you join, such as a printable cram sheet or parent guide (PDF), your ATAR calculator estimate, or your mock exam results. We send it only once your email is confirmed. To write a report we use the subjects and marks you entered in the calculator, or your mock exam marks, just to build that one email, and we do not save them in our database (the email itself is sent through Resend, like our other emails). Download links stop working after 90 days (you can ask for a fresh one) and only work while you are on the list.
Who handles your data
A few services handle personal data for us. We do not sell your details or share them with anyone else.
- Supabase stores the messages and sign-ups we receive in a private database. Our database is in Sydney, Australia (Supabase's ap-southeast-2 region).
- Resend sends our emails: the receipt for a contact message, the waitlist confirmation, your PDFs and the study emails. Each email, and the address it is sent to, passes through Resend.
- PostHog (where configured) receives the product analytics described above, on its EU cloud, so that data is held in Europe.
- Sentry (where configured) receives the error reports described above.
Some of these services run outside Australia, so your information can be handled overseas.
The community forum and accounts (currently offline)
The community forum and optional account sign-in are currently switched off: the forum and account pages redirect to the home page, and we do not create accounts, set a sign-in cookie, or sync study data while they are off. If they return, this section will be updated to describe what they collect before they go live.
If you created a forum account or synced study data before these features were taken offline, that data is held in a private database. You can ask for a copy or for it to be deleted at any time (see “Your rights” below).
Children and younger users
ExamExplained is intended for senior secondary students, who are typically 15 to 18 years old. Reading the site needs no account and collects no information that identifies you. We collect personal data only through the contact form and the waitlist, which are intended for people aged 16 or over. We do not ask your age. If you are under 16, please check with a parent or guardian before you send us your details or join a list. We do not knowingly keep personal information from children under 16; if you believe we have, use the contact form or email privacy@examexplained.com.au and we will delete it.
Your rights and how long we keep data
Where you have given us personal data - a contact-form message, a sign-up for the waitlist, or a forum account or synced study data from before those features went offline - you can ask for a copy or for it to be deleted. Use the contact form or email privacy@examexplained.com.au and we will respond within a reasonable time. Every email we send you has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing stops our emails straight away. You also have the rights available to you under the Australian Privacy Act 1988 (Cth); contact us in either way above to exercise them. If you have only read the site and never signed in or written to us, we hold no personal data about you to access or delete.
We retain personal data only as long as it is needed for the purpose it was collected and delete it on request. Sign-up details are kept until you ask us to delete them. When you unsubscribe, we stop emailing you but keep your sign-up record, marked as unsubscribed, so that we never email the address again unless you sign up afresh; we delete it entirely if you ask. If you sign up but never confirm, we send you nothing beyond the confirmation email. We do not delete unconfirmed sign-ups automatically, so ask us if you would like yours removed.
If you are unhappy with how we have handled your personal information, contact us first and we will try to put it right. You can also complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) at oaic.gov.au.
Changes to this notice
If we change this notice, we'll update the date below. Material changes will be posted as a banner on the home page for 30 days.
