VCE results reviews, exam inspections and appeals (2026 results)

Everything here is run by VCAA, which issues your grades and study scores. VTAC calculates your ATAR from those study scores, so if VCAA changes a result, VTAC is notified. There's no separate process for re-marking an ATAR.

Before you do anything: what does VCAA already check?

VCAA reviews unexpected results before release. It flags exam results that are statistically lower than expected from your GAT and your school's indicative grade, and the Chief Assessor reviews them. For the indicative grade check, the gap must be the equivalent of at least two grades.

So a result that's a bit lower than hoped has usually already been through one check. The processes below are for genuine errors.

Step 1: Statement of Marks and Statement of Study Score

Your December results pack includes a personalised form.

• A Statement of Examination Marks shows your mark for each question or criterion, the maximum available, and the score range for the grade you got.
• A Statement of Study Score shows your graded assessment scores and how your study score was calculated.
• A Statement of GAT Examination Marks is also available.

Applications open on results day, 10 December 2026, and close 5 February 2027. There's no fee for a Statement of Marks, a Statement of Study Score or a Statement of GAT Examination Marks.

Step 2: Inspect your exam

You can ask to look at your written exam papers, and the audio recording of a Music performance exam.

• Apply in writing using the form in your results pack. Your principal signs it.
• The inspection happens at your school, run by your principal. Get your Statement of Marks first and, if you can, have your subject teacher with you.
• You get 15 minutes per written exam (30 to 45 minutes for a Music audio recording).
• No marks or assessor comments appear on the papers. You can't copy, photograph or take them away, so leave your phone at home.
• Video recordings of performance exams and recordings of Languages orals and Extended Investigation oral presentations aren't available.
• The last day to lodge a request is 5 February 2027. The inspection fee is $28.50 per examination, listed on VCAA's fees and charges page and on the Post Results and ATAR Service site for 2026 results. VCAA waived this fee for 2024 results only, so don't expect a waiver.

Step 3: VCE Examination Score Review

This is the process for a marking error on a written exam or the GAT. Students and parents can't apply directly.

1. You get your Statement of Marks and inspect the exam with your teacher.
2. Your teacher identifies the specific questions and the alleged error.
3. Your principal decides whether there are valid grounds and endorses the application.
4. The school submits it to VCAA by Friday 19 February 2027. Late applications aren't accepted.
5. A senior assessor reviews the response and a VCE Score Review Panel considers the recommendation.

VCAA defines a marking error as marks not awarded for a correct answer, a response not considered because of a processing error, or a mark that reflects an unreasonable application of professional judgement. Applications aren't accepted just because a score was lower than expected, and you can't ask for a whole exam to be re-marked.

If a grade or study score goes up, VCAA issues a new Statement of Results and notifies VTAC. A changed question score won't always change your grade or study score.

Step 4: Confirmation of Grades

This is an administrative check, not a re-mark. Your principal can request it when an exam grade is substantially lower than the school expected (typically at least two grades) or when there's an administrative error such as a missing score. VCAA checks that everything was marked, scores were recorded and added correctly, and the right grade was assigned. It covers written exams, performance exams, Languages orals and externally assessed tasks. The deadline is also 19 February 2027.

Can I appeal the outcome?

Yes, through your school. If the school disagrees with the outcome of a score review, the principal or a delegate can appeal to VCAA within three months of receiving the outcome. The grounds are that the outcome is wrong or unreasonable, that the decision maker was biased, or that the review didn't follow VCAA policy.

What about SAC and SAT marks?

The processes above cover external assessment. Questions about a school-assessed mark go to your school first. Remember that VCAA statistically moderates SAC scores against your school's exam results, so your moderated score can differ from your raw school mark. See SACs and SATs explained.
