Sample cards from this deck
Definition
Blood glucose regulation - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Blood glucose falls (between meals, during exercise)
1. Stimulus: blood glucose falls below the normal range.
Definition
Active and passive immunity, vaccination and herd immunity - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Herd immunity
Herd immunity is the indirect protection of people who are not immune (babies too young to be vaccinated, people with weakened immune systems) when a large enough proportion of the population is immune. With few susceptible hosts, each infected person passes the pathogen to fewer others, so chains of transmission break and outbreaks die out. The proportion needed depends on how easily the pathogen spreads: highly contagious diseases such as measles require very high vaccination coverage. If vaccination rates fall below that level, outbreaks can return.
Definition
Designing and evaluating biological investigations (criterion 3) - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Change only one variable
Change only one variable (the IV), so any change in the DV can be attributed to it.
Definition
Cells as the Basis of Life - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Cell
A cell is the smallest structural and functional unit of a living organism, bounded by a membrane and able to carry out the processes of life such as metabolism, growth, and reproduction.
Definition
Cell Membrane and Transport - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Partially permeable membrane
A partially (or selectively) permeable membrane allows some substances to pass through freely while restricting or controlling the movement of others, depending on their size, charge, and solubility.
Definition
Biotechnology - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Recombinant DNA
Recombinant DNA is a single DNA molecule made by joining genetic material from two different sources, for example inserting a human gene into a bacterial plasmid.
Definition
Evidence for Evolution - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Transitional fossil
A transitional fossil shows a mix of features from an ancestral group and a more recent descendant group, providing direct evidence of evolutionary change between forms.
Definition
Osmoregulation and the nephron - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Blood too concentrated (dehydration, sweating, salty food)
1. Stimulus: blood solute concentration rises.
Definition
Innate immune response: first and second lines of defence - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define The inflammatory response
1. Damaged cells and mast cells release chemicals, including histamine.
Definition
Classification and Taxonomy - TCE Biology (Tasmania)
Define Taxonomy
Taxonomy is the science of identifying, naming, and classifying living things into ordered groups called taxa, based on their shared characteristics and evolutionary relationships.
