QCE ATAR lower than expected? Your pathways into uni, TAFE and work

Give yourself a day before deciding anything. How to handle results day is worth reading first. Then work through the options below in order.

1. Rework your preferences

QTAC lets you list up to six preferences, and preference changes close before each offer round then reopen once offers are out. For the 2026 cohort, the key cut-off is 12 pm on Monday 21 December for the 23 December round, then 11.45 pm on Thursday 7 January 2027 for the 14 January round, with more rounds on 21 and 28 January. All the dates are in QCE results day, offers and preferences.

Practical moves:

• Keep your dream course first if your selection rank is close. Adjustments or a lower final threshold can still land it.
• Add a related course at the same or another institution: the same field at a different campus, or a broader degree you can transfer out of later.
• Add a pathway option (see below) in a lower preference as a safety net.

Use the uni course finder and the Queensland university pages, such as QUT, UQ, Griffith, UniSQ, CQUniversity, JCU and UniSC, to compare courses.

2. Check your selection rank, not just your ATAR

QTAC is clear that adjustment factors (formerly bonus points) are added by each institution to create a selection rank for a particular course. They don't change your ATAR. Common types are:

• Subject adjustments, for example for a language other than English or Specialist Mathematics;
• Equity adjustments for disadvantage;
• Location adjustments for where you've lived;
• Elite athlete adjustments.

Each institution sets its own rules and limits the total it will add. QTAC gives "some may cap the increase to 5 points" as an example.

Can the Educational Access Scheme help me?

EAS is for QTAC applicants whose most recent study was affected by circumstances beyond their control. If you're eligible, you may get adjustments to your selection rank, and in the Financial Hardship category you may also get financial help such as scholarships or bursaries from institutions. There are five categories:

1. Financial Hardship
2. Home Environment and Responsibilities
3. School Environment
4. English Language Difficulty
5. Personal Illness or Disability

EAS is evidence-based. You apply through your QTAC application (you can add categories later using QTAC's cover sheets and your application number), upload the required documents as PDFs, and meet QTAC's document due dates for each round. Check that your institution and course accept EAS.

3. Pathway, diploma and preparation programs

These are programs named on QTAC's pathways page and on the providers' own sites. Check each one's current entry rules and intakes before you apply.

If you're missing a prerequisite rather than rank, bridging is often the faster fix. QTAC notes that single-subject bridging units don't contribute to a selection rank but can satisfy prerequisites.

4. TAFE Queensland and VET

TAFE Queensland says completing a Certificate III, Certificate IV, diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree may improve your QTAC selection rank, and that most of its diplomas give about one year of credit towards a three-year degree through its diploma-to-degree pathways. QTAC confirms completed VET qualifications at Certificate III or higher can be a stand-alone basis for admission.

Browse options such as the Diploma of Business, Diploma of Nursing or Diploma of Information Technology in the TAFE course guide. If a trade appeals more than a degree, start with trades and the apprenticeship interview guide.

5. A new ATAR

QTAC will calculate a new ATAR if, within a five-year period, you complete and receive QCAA results in at least three General subjects, or two General subjects plus one Applied subject or a completed Certificate III or higher, at Units 3 and 4. Your best two scaled results from earlier years are also used. Be careful: QTAC warns that some courses, such as medicine, may not treat you as a current Year 12 applicant if you repeat.

6. Start later, or transfer in

• Later offer rounds. QTAC's published calendar continues into February, March, April, May and June 2027. Many courses have later or mid-year intakes, so check each course.
• Transfer after first year. QTAC says completing tertiary-level study (diploma or higher) can give you a better selection rank, so a year in a related course can become your route into the one you wanted.
• Defer or take a gap year. Read deferring your uni offer and gap year or uni straight after before accepting and deferring. Each institution has its own policy.
