What student life looks like
The main St Lucia campus sits in a sweeping bend of the Brisbane River, anchored by the sandstone Great Court. The site is large and parklike, with on-campus lakes, the Forgan Smith building and the Wordsmiths cafe precinct. UQ runs two further teaching campuses, Gatton for agriculture and veterinary science 80 kilometres west of Brisbane, and Herston for health sciences next to the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital. Residential life is concentrated in the St Lucia colleges (King's, Cromwell, Emmanuel, Grace, International House, St John's, St Leo's, Union College, Women's College) and university-managed residences. Most non- residential students live in Toowong, Indooroopilly, Taringa, St Lucia and West End and travel by CityCat ferry, bus, bike or the new Indooroopilly to St Lucia link. The UQ Union runs more than 200 clubs and the Great Court Race is a long-running annual tradition. Semester one runs late February to early June and semester two late July to early November, with the Queensland climate giving long open-air outdoor teaching weeks for most of the year.
