  1. Definition

Empiricism and Rationalism - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Empiricism

The theory that all knowledge, or at least all substantive knowledge of the world, is grounded in and derived from sense experience. There are no innate ideas; the mind acquires its content through sensation and reflection.

  2. Definition

Metaethics, Moral Realism and Relativism - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Metaethics

The branch of ethics that investigates the nature, status and foundations of moral claims, rather than recommending particular actions.

  3. Definition

Free Will and Determinism - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Determinism

The thesis that every event is necessitated by prior events together with the laws of nature, so that at any moment exactly one future is physically possible.

  4. Definition

The Cosmological Argument - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Cosmological argument

Any argument that infers the existence of God, or a first cause or necessary being, from the existence of the universe and the fact that its existence and the causes within it call for an explanation.

  5. Definition

Argument Analysis, Validity and Soundness - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Argument

An argument is a group of statements, one of which (the conclusion) is claimed to follow from the others (the premises).

  6. Definition

Personal Identity Over Time - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Numerical identity

Being one and the same individual, not merely being exactly similar. Two new tennis balls are qualitatively identical but numerically distinct.

  7. Definition

Behaviourism and Functionalism - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Logical behaviourism

The view that talk of mental states can be analysed into, or reduced to, talk of actual and possible behaviour, so mental terms refer to behavioural dispositions rather than to inner states or substances.

  8. Definition

The Good Life and Wellbeing - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Wellbeing

What is ultimately good for a person, considered from the point of view of their own interests. A theory of wellbeing tells us what makes someone's life go better or worse for them, as distinct from what makes them morally good.

  9. Definition

Justified True Belief and Gettier - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Justified true belief (JTB)

S knows that P if and only if (1) P is true, (2) S believes that P, and (3) S is justified in believing that P. The three conditions are meant to be jointly sufficient for knowledge.

  10. Definition

Normative Ethical Theories - TCE Philosophy (Tasmania)

    Define Principle of utility

The claim that the morally right action is the one that produces the greatest balance of wellbeing over suffering, considering all those affected and weighting each person's interests equally.
