ATAR lower than expected in Tasmania? UTAS pathways, TasTAFE and other routes (2026)

First, breathe. Then check the basics: were your results recorded correctly (results queries and inspections), and have you read what your results actually mean?

Can I still get into my UTAS course?

Tasmania has no preference list like UAC or VTAC. You apply straight to the University of Tasmania, and UTAS keeps taking applications after results come out: last applications for most Semester 1, 2027 courses close on 19 February 2027, and for Semester 2 on 2 July 2027. A few courses, such as Medicine and some honours degrees, closed earlier, so check your course. So if you missed a Guaranteed Entry ATAR:

• check the Guaranteed Entry ATAR and prerequisites of related UTAS courses (for example the Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts);
• ask UTAS whether your application can still be considered on your full record;
• if you also applied interstate, the admissions centre there handles changes of preference.

Does UTAS use adjustment factors or bonus points?

Very few. UTAS says it only adjusts the ATAR as part of the Rural Application Process for the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine, where Year 12 leavers from eligible rural areas can receive four or five extra ATAR points depending on the area. Otherwise, if circumstances beyond your control affected your schooling, UTAS encourages you to apply for special consideration as part of your application. For 2027 entry, special consideration applications close at 11:59pm on 4 January 2027, and late applications are not accepted. Don't assume an adjustment will be added automatically.

What if I didn't get an ATAR at all?

UTAS offers Assessed Entry for Tasmanian applicants who don't qualify for an ATAR. It recognises your senior secondary results (TCE and VET), gives you an Assessed Entry Score, and converts it to a rank using TASC's published TE Score to ATAR table.

What are the UTAS pathway programs?

UTAS describes the UPP as a general academic skills course, and pitches the Diploma of University Studies at students who already have an idea of the course they want to study. Check the current course pages for intakes and campuses.

Is TasTAFE a good route?

It can be. TasTAFE says many of its Diploma and Advanced Diploma qualifications give credit into University of Tasmania degrees, so you can build job-ready skills and shorten a later degree. Browse diplomas such as nursing, community services and information technology on the site's TAFE hub, and ask TasTAFE which ones link to the UTAS degree you want.

Can I start mid-year or change course later?

• Mid-year entry. UTAS degrees that offer mid-year entry let you start in Semester 2. Check your course page for a Semester 2 intake.
• Changing course. UTAS says course transfers no longer happen internally: you apply again for the new course and stay enrolled in your current one until a decision is made.

Should I take a gap year?
