What this deck covers

Sample cards from this deck

  1. Definition

Atmospheric pollutants and photochemical smog (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Primary versus secondary pollutants

A primary pollutant is released directly into the atmosphere from a source. A secondary pollutant is not emitted directly but forms in the atmosphere from chemical reactions of primary pollutants, often driven by sunlight.

  2. Definition

Catalysts and activation energy (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Heterogeneous catalysts

Heterogeneous catalysts are in a different phase, usually a solid catalysing gaseous or liquid reactants (e.g. iron in the Haber process, platinum in catalytic converters). Reactants adsorb onto the catalyst surface, which weakens their bonds and holds them in favourable orientations; the products then desorb, freeing the surface.

  3. Definition

Addition and condensation polymers (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Addition polymerisation

Addition polymerisation joins many unsaturated monomers (each containing a C=C\text{C}=\text{C} double bond) into a long saturated chain. The double bonds open and the monomers add directly together, so no small molecule is eliminated and the repeating unit has the same atoms as the monomer.

  4. Definition

Batteries: primary and secondary cells (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Primary and secondary cells

A primary cell generates electricity from a redox reaction that is not practically reversible; when the reactants are consumed the cell is spent and discarded (e.g. zinc-carbon, alkaline).

  5. Definition

Atomic absorption and emission spectroscopy (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Atomic absorption

A sample solution is aspirated into a flame, which evaporates the solvent and breaks compounds into free, neutral, ground-state atoms. A hollow-cathode lamp made of the target metal emits light at exactly the wavelengths that element absorbs.

  6. Definition

Dynamic equilibrium and Kc (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Dynamic equilibrium

In a closed system, dynamic equilibrium is the state where the rate of the forward reaction equals the rate of the reverse reaction.

  7. Definition

Biological molecules: proteins, carbohydrates and lipids (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Proteins

Proteins are chains of amino acids joined by peptide (amide) bonds. Carbohydrates are monosaccharides (e.g. glucose) joined by glycosidic bonds. Lipids (triglycerides) form from glycerol and three fatty acids joined by ester bonds. Each can be broken back into its monomers by hydrolysis, the reverse reaction.

  8. Definition

Electrolytic cells and electrolysis (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Electrolytic cell

An electrolytic cell uses electrical energy from an external power source to force a non-spontaneous redox reaction to occur. The power supply pushes electrons to the cathode (negative in electrolysis), where reduction happens, and pulls electrons from the anode (positive), where oxidation happens.

  9. Definition

Chromatography: GC and HPLC (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Mobile and stationary phases

The stationary phase is fixed in place (a coating on the inside of the GC column, or packed particles in an HPLC column). The mobile phase flows through, carrying the sample.

  10. Definition

Enthalpy and calorimetry (SACE Stage 2 Chemistry)

    Define Exothermic and endothermic

An exothermic reaction releases heat to the surroundings, so the temperature rises and ΔH\Delta H is negative; the products have lower energy than the reactants.
