HSC ATAR lower than expected? Your pathways into uni, TAFE and work

Step 1: check your selection rank, not just your ATAR

UAC's advice after ATAR release in 2025 was blunt: many offers go to students whose ATAR is below the lowest selection rank, because selection ranks include adjustment factors. Look up the adjustment factors each university offers on its own website and work out your selection rank per course.

If disadvantage affected your Year 11 or 12 studies, an Educational Access Scheme (EAS) application can also count. The EAS deadline for December Round 2 is 19 November 2026; later closing dates apply for the January rounds (25 December 2026 for January Round 1), and EAS closes for semester 1 on 5 February 2027. Step 2: rework your preferences

The full dates are on HSC results day and UAC offers. In short:

• Keep your dream course first if you like. UAC points out lowest selection ranks change from year to year.
• Add realistic options below it, including a pathway course at the same uni.
• Don't waste a preference on a course whose prerequisites you don't meet.

If you miss out, rounds continue: 8 January, 21 January, 4 February, 11 February and 4 March 2027 (all 7.30 am). Some institutions also make slipback offers: a place in a pathway course if you weren't competitive for the course you applied for. UAC releases these up to two days after scheduled rounds.

What pathway courses are there?

UAC groups them into three types:

Real NSW examples, checked on the universities' own sites:

• Western Sydney University, The College: 12-month diplomas (for example in Business, Arts or Science) that can lead into the second year of a related Western bachelor degree. See Western Sydney University.
• University of Newcastle, Open Foundation and Yapug: enabling programs (Newstep has been combined into Open Foundation). Open Foundation has no tuition fees, and completing it gives guaranteed entry to a list of selected degrees. See University of Newcastle.

Most universities run their own pathway options; UAC's institution profile pages list them, and you can compare unis in the uni finder.

TAFE and VET routes

• TAFE NSW offers a Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation (the Tertiary Preparation Certificate), which UAC lists as a uni pathway.
• Universities may consider completed Certificate IV, diploma or advanced diploma qualifications for entry; check which level a uni needs for your degree.
• NESA notes the Smart and Skilled program subsidises VET for school leavers aged 15 and over, for qualifications up to and including Certificate III.

Mid-year entry

UAC says most universities take mid-year enrolments, with more than 1,500 undergraduate courses starting in semester 2 of 2026. Semester 2 applications open as early as April. Dates for semester 2 of 2027 are to be announced on UAC's key dates page.

Start a related degree, then transfer

UAC notes many students start in a general degree and transfer after a year. You either apply for an internal transfer at your uni or submit a new UAC application, and UAC then assesses your university results as well as your HSC. Some institutions only consider tertiary results after a full year. If you move, withdraw formally from the old course to avoid extra HECS debt or fail grades.

Repeat or add HSC courses

UAC lets you accumulate ATAR courses over a rolling five years. If you repeat a course, your latest satisfactory attempt counts, even if it's lower, and your ATAR is recalculated. It's a real option if one or two courses dragged your aggregate down, but it's a year's commitment, so weigh it against a pathway course.

Take a gap year
