Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
at Western Sydney University, New South Wales.
A four-year Engineers Australia accredited honours degree offered at Parramatta City, Penrith and Sydney City (full-time only at Sydney City). No prerequisites; assumed knowledge is Mathematics Advanced (Band 5), any 2 units of science and any 2 units of English. Includes 12 weeks of industrial experience.
Lowest selection rank
The lowest selection rank (LSR) is the lowest ATAR plus adjustment factors (equity, subject and regional bonuses) that received an offer to the WSU Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) for that intake. Universities publish it in their admissions student profiles. Only intakes with a published figure are listed.
| Intake | Lowest selection rank | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 68.15 | uac.edu.au |
| 2024 | 68.00 | uac.edu.au |
| 2023 | 70.05 | uac.edu.au |
A lowest selection rank describes a past intake, not a guaranteed entry score. Check the current entry requirements on the official course page before you apply through UAC.
Prerequisite Year 12 subjects
No formal Year 12 subject prerequisites; assumed knowledge may still apply.
What you will study
Students choose a specialisation: advanced manufacturing, civil, construction, electrical, materials, mechanical, robotics and mechatronics, or sustainability engineering. Western recommends Physics and Mathematics Extension 1 or Extension 2 at school, and the assumed Mathematics Advanced result is Band 5. The degree includes 12 weeks of industrial experience with an engineering employer.
Placement and industry experience
Students must complete 12 weeks of industrial experience with an engineering employer before graduating. Finding and completing this experience is part of the degree requirements, so it is worth planning early for summer or part-time engineering work.
Career outcomes
- Graduates work as professional engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical, mining and software roles after gaining Engineers Australia registration.
- Common destinations include consulting engineering firms (AECOM, Aurecon, Arup), infrastructure agencies and major mining and energy companies.
- Many alumni move into project management, technology start-ups or graduate management programmes within five years.
Professional accreditation
- Engineers Australia (all specialisations)
Typical first jobs
- Graduate engineer at large consulting and design firms
- Graduate engineer at construction and infrastructure contractors
- Graduate engineer at mining and energy companies
- Software or systems engineer at tech, banking and defence companies
- Project engineer at infrastructure agencies and utilities
- Graduate in government engineering departments and councils
Graduate starting salary
$75,000 - $90,000 per year

After graduation
All specialisations are accredited by Engineers Australia, so graduates are recognised as professional engineers and can work toward Chartered status (CPEng) after supervised practice. Research-minded graduates can go on to a Master of Research or PhD.
Is this the right degree for you?
You probably thrive here if
- Students who excelled in Year 12 maths (typically Extension 1 or Extension 2) and physics
- Those who enjoy building and problem solving in teams
- People aiming for chartered engineering status and a long technical career
- Students happy to do industry placement during summers
- Those willing to manage demanding workloads across four years
It is probably not for you if
- Students wanting a three-year degree with light maths
- Those who dislike laboratory and design-studio work
- Anyone uncomfortable with high contact hours (typically 22 to 28 per week)
