What you will study
The UTAS Bachelor of Education (Primary) is delivered by the School of Education at Newnham (Launceston) and Sandy Bay (Hobart), with cohorts also based at Cradle Coast (Burnie). Year one introduces Learners and Learning, English Curriculum and Pedagogy, Mathematics Curriculum and Pedagogy, Aboriginal Education and an early professional experience block. Year two layers The Arts, Health and Physical Education, Science and Technologies curriculum and pedagogy, plus assessment and reporting. Year three builds advanced curriculum and pedagogy in English and Mathematics, inclusive education, literacy and numeracy specialisation units and a longer professional experience placement. Year four is the consolidation year with an extended Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA), a capstone research unit and the final 30 to 40 day professional experience. Across the degree, students complete at least 80 supervised days of professional experience in Tasmanian Department for Education, Catholic Education Tasmania and Independent Schools Tasmania classrooms. National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) must be passed before graduation.

Placement and industry experience
AITSL-accredited programme requiring 80 days minimum of supervised professional experience across diverse Tasmanian schools. Placements rotate through the Department for Education TAS, Catholic Education Tasmania and Independent Schools Tasmania partner schools, with blocks across early years (Foundation to Year 2), middle primary (Years 3 to 4) and upper primary (Years 5 to 6). Students are matched with mentor teachers under the AITSL Professional Experience framework. Working with Vulnerable People registration, anaphylaxis training and Mandatory Reporting training are required before each placement. The fourth-year Teaching Performance Assessment is externally moderated and is a national accreditation requirement.

After graduation
Graduates are eligible for provisional registration with the Teachers Registration Board of Tasmania and equivalent interstate authorities. Postgraduate routes include the UTAS Master of Education (Curriculum and Pedagogy, Leadership, Inclusive Education or Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Graduate Certificate in Specialist Teaching (literacy, numeracy or Aboriginal education) and the Master of Educational Leadership for prospective school leaders. Many graduates progress into Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher (HALT) certification, then deputy or principal roles within ten years. Research-track graduates can enter the Master of Education (Research) and PhD.
