What you will study
First year is studio-based foundation work: design thinking, visual communication, typography, drawing and visualisation, plus introductions to digital design tools and the history of design. At Sippy Downs you work in shared studios with small cohorts, getting hands-on critique time rather than sitting in large lecture theatres. Second year you develop a focus such as visual communication, interaction and user experience, or spatial and product design. Projects become brief-driven and client-facing, often connected to Sunshine Coast businesses, councils and not-for-profits, so you build real work for your portfolio. Third year centres on a major self-directed design project and a professional-practice subject covering freelancing, pitching and running a studio. Many students complete a work-integrated learning placement and present at the graduate exhibition, which doubles as an industry showcase.

After graduation
Most graduates move straight into agency, studio or in-house design roles, or freelance practice. Membership of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA) is available to graduates. Postgraduate options include masters in design, user experience, communication or creative industries, and graduate study in animation, screen or business for those starting their own studio. Many UniSC design graduates build a regional client base before moving to Brisbane agencies.
