What you will study

Torrens delivers technology and engineering programmes through its applied colleges in small classes with a hands-on, project-based style. First year builds the engineering core: engineering mathematics, physics, computing and programming, statics and an introduction to engineering design and the profession, taught through labs and team projects rather than lectures alone. Through the middle of the degree you specialise in a discipline such as civil, mechanical, electrical, software or mechatronic engineering, working through the technical theory and design methods of that field. Teaching pairs analysis with practical and design work, and trimester delivery with multiple intakes a year structures the coursework and project sequence. The final stage centres on a major capstone design project and the mandatory industry placement that Engineers Australia accreditation requires. Graduates finish with a portfolio of design work, documented professional experience and a qualification accredited for the engineering profession.

After graduation

Graduates enter graduate engineering roles and work toward Chartered status with Engineers Australia through documented professional experience. Many move into project management, technical leadership or specialist consulting within a few years. Torrens offers articulated postgraduate engineering and technology study entered by direct application across multiple intakes, and graduates can also pursue research masters and PhD pathways.

Is this the right degree for you?

You probably thrive here if

  • Students who enjoy maths, physics and problem solving
  • Practical learners who like designing and building things
  • Those comfortable with a heavy quantitative workload
  • People who work well in design and project teams
  • Self-directed students suited to trimester delivery

It is probably not for you if

  • Students who dislike advanced maths and physics
  • Those wanting a creative, humanities or design-only degree
  • People who prefer light timetables and minimal project work
  • Students seeking a quick three-year qualification
