What you will study
First year introduces the foundations of teaching and learning: child development and educational psychology, the Australian Curriculum, classroom and behaviour management, and an introduction to literacy and numeracy teaching. QUT places you in schools early through observation and short professional-experience days. Second and third years build curriculum and pedagogy across the primary learning areas: English and literacy, mathematics and numeracy, science, humanities and social sciences, the arts, health and physical education, and technologies. You also study inclusive education, First Nations perspectives and assessment, with increasing time on supervised practicum in real classrooms across diverse Queensland schools. Fourth year focuses on becoming a graduate-ready teacher, with advanced curriculum units, professional practice and an extended final placement. You must demonstrate the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers and pass the national literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education students before graduating.
