What student life looks like
The Parkville campus is the largest single-site precinct of any Australian university, sitting on the edge of the CBD next to the Royal Melbourne Hospital, the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute and the Peter Doherty Institute. The South Lawn, Old Quad and Union House precinct anchor day-to-day campus life. Accommodation is split between the residential colleges along College Crescent (Trinity, Ormond, Queen's, Newman, International House, Janet Clarke Hall, Whitley, University College, St Hilda's, Medley) and the university-managed residences. Most non-residential students live across Carlton, Brunswick, Fitzroy, North Melbourne and the inner-north tram corridors and the Upfield train line. The University of Melbourne Student Union runs over 200 clubs, and the trams along Swanston Street are essentially free to ride within the CBD free tram zone. Semester one runs late February to early June and semester two late July to mid-November, with the Melbourne Model funnelling almost every undergraduate into a broad bachelor before a graduate professional degree such as the JD, MD or Master of Teaching.
