Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
at Macquarie University, New South Wales.
A four-year honours engineering degree at Macquarie's North Ryde campus with specialisations in civil, electrical and electronic, mechanical, mechatronic and software engineering. Ranks shown are for Civil; other specialisations were 80.40 to 81.70 in 2025. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics Advanced (Band 4).
Lowest selection rank
The lowest selection rank (LSR) is the lowest ATAR plus adjustment factors (equity, subject and regional bonuses) that received an offer to the Macquarie Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) for that intake. Universities publish it in their admissions student profiles. Only intakes with a published figure are listed.
| Intake | Lowest selection rank | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 80.10 | uac.edu.au |
| 2024 | 80.40 | uac.edu.au |
| 2023 | 80.15 | uac.edu.au |
A lowest selection rank describes a past intake, not a guaranteed entry score. Check the current entry requirements on the official course page before you apply through UAC.
Prerequisite Year 12 subjects
No formal Year 12 subject prerequisites; assumed knowledge may still apply.
What you will study
Students choose a specialisation in civil, electrical and electronic, mechanical, mechatronic or software engineering, or start with the new Flexible First-Year option. Civil engineering, for example, covers construction management, fluid mechanics, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and hydrology, soil mechanics, structural analysis and design and transport engineering. Macquarie recommends Mathematics Extension 1 or 2 plus Physics.
Placement and industry experience
Students undertake a work-integrated learning activity with a partner organisation as part of the degree.
Career outcomes
- Graduates work as professional engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical, mining and software roles after gaining Engineers Australia registration.
- Common destinations include consulting engineering firms (AECOM, Aurecon, Arup), infrastructure agencies and major mining and energy companies.
- Many alumni move into project management, technology start-ups or graduate management programmes within five years.
Typical first jobs
- Graduate engineer at large consulting and design firms
- Graduate engineer at construction and infrastructure contractors
- Graduate engineer at mining and energy companies
- Software or systems engineer at tech, banking and defence companies
- Project engineer at infrastructure agencies and utilities
- Graduate in government engineering departments and councils
Graduate starting salary
$75,000 - $90,000 per year

After graduation
Graduates work as engineers in consulting, infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and technology, and can progress to Chartered status through Engineers Australia after supervised experience. Check Engineers Australia accreditation status for your specialisation on the course page.
Is this the right degree for you?
You probably thrive here if
- Students who excelled in Year 12 maths (typically Extension 1 or Extension 2) and physics
- Those who enjoy building and problem solving in teams
- People aiming for chartered engineering status and a long technical career
- Students happy to do industry placement during summers
- Those willing to manage demanding workloads across four years
It is probably not for you if
- Students wanting a three-year degree with light maths
- Those who dislike laboratory and design-studio work
- Anyone uncomfortable with high contact hours (typically 22 to 28 per week)
