Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

at University of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory.

A four-year accredited engineering honours degree. Most programmes ladder a common first year into civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, software or mechatronic majors with mandatory industry placement.

What you will study

The UC Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is a four-year Engineers Australia accredited program from the Faculty of Science and Technology, available in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Network and Software Engineering, and Renewable Energy Engineering streams. Year one is a shared engineering core: Engineering Mathematics 1 and 2, Engineering Mechanics, Engineering Materials, Introduction to Programming (Python or C), Engineering Design and Innovation, and Physics for Engineers. Year two confirms the chosen discipline and layers calculus, differential equations, statistics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, electrical principles and design studios. Year three runs advanced discipline units (structural design, thermofluids, control systems, power, communications) and the start of the Engineering Project sequence. Year four is dominated by the individual research thesis or industry-linked project, professional engineering practice, electives and a capstone group design project. UC engineering is structured around close ties to Canberras infrastructure agencies, CSIRO Black Mountain, ACT Government infrastructure teams and the defence-industry primes operating from Russell, Fairbairn and the Brindabella Business Park.

Example first-year subjects

  • Engineering Mathematics 1
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Engineering Materials
  • Introduction to Programming
  • Engineering Design and Innovation
  • Physics for Engineers

How you will be assessed

  • Final exams of 40 to 60 percent in maths-heavy engineering core units
  • Laboratory reports and pre-lab quizzes (mechanics, electronics, materials)
  • Design studio submissions with drawings, prototypes and team presentations
  • Programming and modelling assignments in Python, MATLAB and AutoCAD/Revit
  • Capstone individual thesis (year four) supervised by an academic
  • Industry placement logbook and supervisor evaluation

Placement and industry experience

Engineers Australia accreditation requires 60 days (12 weeks) of supervised industry placement before graduation. UC runs an industry placement office to match students with engineering employers across the Canberra precinct: CSIRO Black Mountain, Geoscience Australia (Symonston), Department of Defence engineering teams (Russell, Fairbairn), defence-industry primes (Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, EOS), ACT Government Major Projects Canberra, water utility Icon Water, Roads ACT, and Canberra-based consulting firms (Aurecon, GHD, AECOM, Calibre). Most students complete placement across summer breaks in year two and year three. Pay is typically at industry-standard intern rates.

Career outcomes

  • Graduates work as professional engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical, mining and software roles after gaining Engineers Australia registration.
  • Common destinations include consulting engineering firms (AECOM, Aurecon, Arup), infrastructure agencies and major mining and energy companies.
  • Many alumni move into project management, technology start-ups or graduate management programmes within five years.

Professional accreditation

  • Engineers Australia

Typical first jobs

  • Graduate engineer at ACT Government Major Projects Canberra and Roads ACT
  • Graduate civil engineer at Icon Water (Canberras water utility)
  • Graduate engineer at consulting firms (AECOM, Aurecon, GHD, Calibre) Canberra offices
  • Graduate engineer at defence-industry primes (Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Northrop Grumman, EOS Defence Systems)
  • Graduate engineer at CSIRO Black Mountain and Geoscience Australia
  • Software or systems engineer at Canberra tech firms and the Australian Signals Directorate

Graduate starting salary

$72,000 - $88,000 per year

After graduation

Honours classification is built into the degree (no extra year required). Top students enter UC research masters and PhD pathways through the Faculty of Science and Technology. Common postgraduate pivots include Master of Engineering (specialty stream), Master of Project Management (a UC strength), Master of Construction Management and the MBA. The Engineers Australia pathway leads to Chartered Status (CPEng) after typically three to five years of supervised work. Combined bachelors with Business, IT and Architecture are offered.

Is this the right degree for you?

You probably thrive here if

  • Students who excelled in Year 12 Methods and physics
  • Those who enjoy building and problem solving in teams
  • People aiming for chartered engineering status and a long technical career
  • Students happy to do industry placement during summers in the Canberra precinct
  • Those willing to manage demanding workloads across four years

It is probably not for you if

  • Students wanting a three-year degree with light maths
  • Those who dislike laboratory and design-studio work
  • Anyone uncomfortable with high contact hours (typically 22 to 28 per week)
