Who needs the UCAT ANZ: the Consortium list and courses not on it

The UCAT ANZ Consortium lists 17 entries (18 universities, since Newcastle and New England share the Joint Medical Program) and 23 courses whose medicine, dentistry or clinical science courses use the test for 2027 entry. Some pathways do not need it, there are no general exemptions, and each university sets how the score counts. Only Sydney and Bond are confirmed as not using it.

Last checked against the official sources.

If you want a course on the Consortium's list, check whether the test is compulsory or optional for it. For most courses on the list you must sit the UCAT ANZ in the year you apply, two medical science entries are marked optional, and there are no general exemptions. Some pathways and courses, such as Sydney's school-leaver medicine program, do not use it. Always confirm on the university's own page before booking.

The Consortium's official list was checked on 7 October 2026. It says you must sit the UCAT ANZ in the test window if you intend to apply for entry in 2027 to a relevant course or programme on the list. Two entries, Griffith's medical science and the Sunshine Coast's medicine science, are marked optional.

The Consortium universities (2027 entry)

New South Wales
UNSW, Western Sydney University, Charles Sturt University (medicine and dentistry), and the Joint Medical Program run by Newcastle and New England. No entry on the list is in the Australian Capital Territory.
Queensland
the University of Queensland (medicine with a provisional entry pathway, and dental science); Central Queensland, Southern Queensland and the Sunshine Coast, which list provisional-entry pathways into UQ or Griffith medicine (the Sunshine Coast's medicine science entry is optional); and Griffith (dental health science compulsory, medical science optional).
Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania
Monash; Adelaide (medicine, dental surgery and oral health); Flinders; Curtin; the University of Western Australia (medicine and dental medicine); and the University of Tasmania.
New Zealand
Auckland and Otago. New Zealand applicants are ranked differently from the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). The University of Auckland ranks applicants by grade point average (GPA) in listed courses, according to its MBChB page, and the University of Otago's UCAT article names Health Science First Year and Graduate categories but gives no ranking rule, so check Otago's own Medicine page.

That is 17 entries on the Consortium's list (18 universities, since Newcastle and New England share the Joint Medical Program) and 23 courses, and the explorer has a row for each entry's courses (Adelaide's Oral Health course is covered in its Dental Surgery row). The exact course names, and which entries are optional or provisional, are on the official list.

Open the explorer for each course's own rule. See also changes for 2027 and 2028 entry, because Auckland's use of the test ends for 2028 entry.

Who is eligible to sit

The test is for people undertaking or who have completed the final year of secondary school, or higher (Year 12 in Australia, Year 13 in New Zealand). Australian Year 11 and New Zealand Year 12 students cannot sit it. A candidate may sit only once per cycle. Anyone affiliated with a UCAT coaching business, for example as a tutor or item developer, or with a financial interest in one, is not eligible to sit. The official eligibility page also covers graduates, international candidates and applying to the UK.

Courses not on the Consortium list

Some pathways do not require the test, but a course missing from the list is not proof that it does not use UCAT ANZ. Our explorer includes six well-known courses that are not on the Consortium list: Sydney, Melbourne, Bond, James Cook, La Trobe and Notre Dame. Only two of the six are confirmed as not using the test on an official page: for Sydney, Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) lists "UCAT ANZ required: No", and for Bond, its FAQ states it does not use UCAT ANZ. For the other four, the explorer shows the UCAT status as Not confirmed and asks you to check the university's own page.

Key fact

The Consortium advises you to check the entry requirements of each course on the university's website before booking a test, because some pathways do not need it and some applicants need a different test.

For 2027 entry the Consortium lists Adelaide, Central Queensland, Charles Sturt, Curtin, Flinders, Griffith, Monash, Newcastle with New England, UNSW, Queensland, Southern Queensland, Sunshine Coast, Tasmania, Western Australia and Western Sydney in Australia, and Auckland and Otago in New Zealand. Each course on the list is shown in the explorer.
