The University of Auckland's medicine interview is an online, video-recorded Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) on the Kira Talent platform, with no live interviewer: 8 stations of 3.5 minutes, 7 of them scored. The 2026 MMI was held on 8 September 2026. School leavers cannot apply directly and apply in a first year of study, so check which year's rules apply to you.
Who this applies to
Auckland says school leavers cannot apply directly to the MBChB and are advised to apply through First Year entry. You can apply under First Year entry only once, and only in the year in which you study that first year.
Auckland sets different rules by entry year, and it asks you to use the year of application:
- For 2027 entry, applicants sit the UCAT ANZ in the year of application.
- For 2028 entry, the UCAT ANZ is replaced by Auckland's own situational judgement test (Casper), sat in the year of application.
On Auckland's wording, a student in their final school year in 2026 (Year 12 in Australia, Year 13 in New Zealand) who starts First Year in 2027 would apply for 2028 entry, so the 2028 rules would be the ones to read. This is our reading of Auckland's page, not a statement from Auckland, so check with Auckland before deciding whether to sit the UCAT ANZ for it.
How the MMI is delivered
- The general MMI is held online. Auckland says all general MMIs in 2026 are online.
- It uses an asynchronous, video-recorded model on the Kira Talent platform, so you record your answers rather than meet an interviewer live.
- There are 8 stations, each with one question or scenario and each taking 3.5 minutes. Seven are assessed: 30 seconds to read the question, then 3 minutes to answer. The eighth is an administrative station for ID verification.
- Auckland's FAQ says a different person reviews each response, so seven separate people assess each applicant.
- You need a computer with a webcam and microphone (not a phone), stable internet, a quiet room where you are alone, and two forms of ID. Handwritten notes on paper are allowed only during the 30-second reading time.
- Auckland publishes MMI domain descriptions, attributes, tips and FAQs on its MMI page. Read these first.
What the university says about ranking
- 2027 entry: the MMI is 25 per cent of the final ranking, alongside GPA at 60 per cent and UCAT ANZ at 15 per cent.
- 2028 entry: the MMI is 50 per cent of the final ranking (a minimum threshold applies) and Casper is the other 50 per cent.
- Auckland has not yet published the format or date of the MMI for 2028 entry, so how it will run is not known. Do not assume it will match the 2026 MMI.
Dates published
- The 2026 MMI (for 2027 entry) was held online on Tuesday 8 September 2026 at 11.00am. All applicants completed it at the same time.
- For 2028 entry (Semester One 2028) the closing date is 1 July 2027.

How to prepare
Start with the free tips, domain descriptions and attributes that Auckland publishes on its MMI page. We do not publish stations from real interviews, and we do not predict what you will be asked. Try our original practice scenarios for thinking practice. Because Auckland's answers are recorded and timed, practise answering aloud to a timer.
