Close reading and critical insight only earn marks if they are organised into a sustained argument, and structuring that argument is its own skill within the Responding to Texts assessment type, worth 50% of your grade. The performance standards reward responses that are coherent, sustained and developed, with ideas expressed in a logical and convincing sequence. A response can be full of sharp observations and still fail to argue, if those observations are not arranged so each one advances a single, governing case.
The difference is between accumulation and development. An accumulating response says here is a point, and another, and another. A developing response says because of this, then this follows, and so the text is finally doing this. The reader should feel the argument move.
A thesis you could disagree with
A sustained response begins from a thesis specific enough to be arguable. A topic is not a thesis: "this text explores grief" tells the reader nothing they could contest. A thesis stakes a claim: "the text presents grief as something language fails to hold, and its broken syntax enacts that failure." A contestable thesis gives every later paragraph a job, because each one now has to prove part of it.
One governing claim per paragraph
Each body paragraph should open with a claim that is a sub-argument of the thesis, then prove it with embedded evidence and analysis of effect. The opening sentence is a promise; the rest of the paragraph keeps it. If a paragraph makes two unrelated points, split it; if it makes none, cut it.
Open and close with purpose
The introduction should state the thesis and the path the argument will take, without a long preamble about the author or the era. The conclusion should do more than restate: it should synthesise, showing what the argument has established and why it matters to how we read the text. A conclusion that merely repeats the introduction wastes the one place you can demonstrate considered judgement.

Define what framing means here. Argue that the introduction establishes the lens through which the audience reads the rest, in the Redfern Speech by positioning the speaker and audience together as "we" who must confront a shared history.
Show the structural moves. Point to how the opening establishes common ground and a respectful register before naming any wrongs, so the audience is brought onside before the confronting catalogue begins.
Link to the whole argument. Explain that this framing makes the later accountability feel like a shared conclusion rather than an accusation - the introduction governs the argument's direction.
