Aural skills are the ability to recognise, name and remember what you hear. Score reading is the ability to convert notation into sound in your head and to follow a score while music plays. QCAA Music depends on both: the musicologist hears and identifies elements, the composer hears ideas before notating them, and the performer reads to realise. The External Assessment in particular rewards fast, accurate listening, so these skills are worth deliberate training rather than hoping they develop on their own.
Active listening, not passive hearing
Most listening is passive: the music washes over you. Analytical listening is active and goal-directed. You decide in advance what to track (metre, harmony, texture, tone colour) and you listen repeatedly, each pass focused on one or two elements. You take timed notes, build a map of when sections and changes occur, and you rewind to confirm rather than guessing. Passive listening produces vague impressions; active listening produces evidence.
Recognising the elements by ear
The core aural targets are the elements themselves. For duration, you identify metre, tempo and rhythmic devices. For pitch, you hear the scale or mode, melodic contour, and intervals. For harmony, you recognise chord qualities, progressions and cadences. For tone colour, you identify instruments and techniques. For texture, you count and track independent lines (monophony, homophony, polyphony). For dynamics and expression, you follow shaping and articulation. For structure, you hear repetition, contrast and the boundaries of sections.
Score reading: notation to sound and back
Score reading runs in two directions. Reading from notation, you look at a passage and hear it internally: the clef and key tell you the pitches, the time signature and values tell you the rhythm, the markings tell you the expression. Reading toward notation, you hear a fragment and write it down, which is transcription. Both directions reinforce each other, and both turn the abstract symbols on the page into a living sense of the music.
Following a score in real time
A distinct and assessable skill is keeping your place in a score while the music plays at tempo. This requires reading slightly ahead of the sound, recognising structural landmarks (a key change, a return of a theme, a new section) and recovering quickly if you lose your place. It is the skill that lets you cite a bar number as evidence, and it is built by practising with score and recording together, gradually at faster tempos.
The listening habits that limit accuracy
Make aural and score work a routine: a short transcription, an interval and chord recognition drill, and one scored excerpt followed in real time, a few times each week. These compounding small sessions are what separate students who describe music vaguely from those who hear and cite it precisely under examination conditions.

The paper's instructions require that when you justify a judgment you must refer to the score using bar numbers and/or the audio using minutes and seconds.
