How to structure a QCE English extended response quiz

All four assessments are completely different in structure, and so there is no shared principle that carries across the written tasks, the spoken task, and the two examinations at all

Only the three internal assessments share a common architecture; the external assessment is built on an entirely separate structural logic that has nothing whatsoever in common with the way any of the three IAs are organised internally

There is no underlying architectural principle of any kind, since each instrument is designed in isolation and the structure is left entirely to the individual student to invent

Despite different formats (IA1 written, IA2 spoken, IA3 written exam, EA written exam), each has an opening that sets context, a developed body that does distinct work in coordinated units, and a closing that lands the piece

Every paragraph must be exactly the same length as the others, so that the body of the piece looks balanced and even on the page

If removing a paragraph leaves the argument or narrative intact, that paragraph is decoration; top-band pieces have indispensable paragraphs

Every paragraph must follow exactly the same internal structure as every other one, with the sentences arranged in an identical order

Distinct work simply means using different vocabulary in each paragraph, so that the writer avoids repeating any of the same words too often

Title, Ending, Editing, Length - a checklist for the whole piece that applies equally to every kind of writing in QCE English, including the spoken response and the two written examinations

Theme, Emotion, Event, Lesson - a structure used only for the imaginative written task, which is built around feeling and storytelling rather than the development of an analytical argument across paragraphs

Topic sentence, Evidence, Explanation, Link - useful internal paragraph structure for the written analytical work in IA1 and the EA; IA2 is spoken (different pacing logic), IA3 imaginative (different narrative logic)

Test, Evidence, Example, Lesson - a structure said to be used only for examination writing under timed conditions, and never for any of the internal assessments that are drafted at home over a longer period of time during the term

Nothing is wrong with it; it is a strong and purposeful topic sentence that clearly sets up a developed sub-claim for the paragraph

The problem is that it refers to 'the author' rather than naming the writer, which is the only thing that needs to be corrected here

The only issue is that the sentence is far too short, and simply extending it with more detail would make it an effective topic sentence

It announces a list of techniques rather than develops a sub-claim, which signals checklist analysis rather than sustained argument

Paragraphs serve narrative or rhetorical shape (rising action, structural turn, etc.) rather than argument development, but the principle of distinct purposeful paragraphs remains; the structure must be planned in advance because IA3 is supervised

It has no structure at all to speak of, since imaginative writing is entirely free-form and the writer is simply meant to let the piece take whatever shape it happens to take as the words come out spontaneously on the day of the supervised exam itself

It uses the TEEL paragraph structure throughout in exactly the same way as the analytical tasks do, because every single QCE English piece, regardless of its form, is built on the very same topic-sentence-and-evidence pattern internally

It is simply shorter than the other instruments, but is otherwise structured in an identical way, with the same argument-driven paragraphs and the same opening, body, and closing logic as IA1

Restate the introduction in slightly different words, reminding the reader of the thesis and the points already made in the body

Synthesise the piece briefly AND push outward to what the analysis or narrative reveals beyond its immediate scope

List all of the literary techniques used across the piece one final time, gathering them together into a summary at the very end

Apologise for any weaknesses or gaps in the analysis, acknowledging to the marker the points the writer did not have room to cover

Apply the pre-prepared structure exactly as written, regardless of what the specific task asks, since a polished and well-practised template will always score well in any case

Never prepare any structure in advance at all, and instead work out the shape of the response entirely on the spot during the assessment itself

Adapt the structure to the specific task - markers can tell when a template is forced onto a question, and even rough adaptation scores better than rigid template application

Memorise complete pre-prepared responses word-for-word ahead of time and reproduce the closest one in the exam, adjusting only a few words to fit the task

Writing with strong, heartfelt emotion throughout, so that the marker can clearly feel how passionate the writer is about the subject of the piece

Using long, elaborate sentences packed with detail, on the basis that more complex sentence construction is what the criterion is really rewarding

Carefully avoiding any controversial or difficult topics throughout the piece, so that nothing in the response could ever be read as risky, provocative, or in any way likely to unsettle the marker reading it

Every choice (word, sentence, structure, vocal delivery in IA2) serves the audience, purpose, and form of the task; markers can tell you knew why you made each choice

Study sample A-band pieces, write or rehearse timed body sections appropriate to the target instrument (TEEL paragraphs for IA1/EA, spoken sections for IA2, imaginative scenes for IA3), then full pieces under matching conditions, focused on structural weakness identified - 5+ practice pieces total

Memorise three complete pieces word-for-word well ahead of time, one for each kind of task, and then reproduce whichever is the closest match in the assessment itself, changing only a few small details here and there so that it appears, on the surface, to fit the particular question that is actually set on the day

Read widely across sample A-band pieces and study how they are put together, but never actually write or rehearse any full practice pieces of your own under matching conditions before the assessment itself

Simply trust your instincts on the day and rely on your natural feel for structure, since practising whole pieces in advance tends to make the writing feel rehearsed, stiff, and overly formulaic to the marker
