HSC Mathematics Standard 1: the 2026 guide to Year 12, the optional exam and the ATAR
A guide to HSC Mathematics Standard 1 (2017 syllabus): how it relates to Standard 2, the Year 12 topics, school-based assessment graded A to E, the optional 80-mark HSC exam on 19 October 2026 and how it can count towards an ATAR, with links to every dot point.
HSC Mathematics Standard 1 is the NESA course for students who want practical, everyday mathematics: budgeting, loans, rates, measurement, reading graphs and data, and planning with networks. It is part of the Mathematics Standard Stage 6 Syllabus (2017), which is still the syllabus for Year 12 in 2026 (the new Mathematics Standard 11-12 Syllabus starts in Year 11 in 2026, with its first HSC exam in 2027).
How Standard 1 relates to Standard 2
- Year 11 is shared. All Mathematics Standard students study the same Year 11 course (course 11236).
- Year 12 splits into Standard 1 (course 15231) or Standard 2 (course 15236). They exclude each other.
- Common content. The optional Standard 1 exam includes items common with the Standard 2 exam, worth 20 to 25 marks.

School-based assessment (every Standard 1 student)
Your school reports a grade from A to E using NESA's Achievement Level Descriptions for Mathematics Standard 1. The mandatory components are Understanding, Fluency and Communication (50%) and Problem Solving, Reasoning and Justification (50%). NESA's sample Year 12 program has 4 tasks, each weighted 10% to 40%, including an assignment or investigation-style task (15% to 30%) and one formal written exam (at most 30%).
The optional HSC exam
To sit it, you must also be enrolled in 15232 Mathematics Standard 1 (Exam). NESA's specifications:
- 80 marks, 2 hours plus 10 minutes reading time.
- A reference sheet is provided and NESA-approved calculators are allowed.
- Section I (10 marks): objective-response questions.
- Section II (70 marks): 30 to 35 items (questions may have parts), with at least two items worth 4 or 5 marks.
- Based on the Year 12 Standard 1 course; Year 11 content marked with ◊ in the syllabus is assumed knowledge and may be examined.
- 20 to 25 marks of items are common with the Standard 2 exam.
Your HSC mark and band come from the exam alone and are reported on a separate line from your school grade.

The ATAR
If you sit the optional exam, UAC may use your exam mark in the ATAR calculation, and from the 2025 HSC onwards Standard 1 is no longer classified as Category B. In UAC's 2025 scaling report, Mathematics Standard 1 (exam) had 3,737 students and a mean scaled mark of 13.9 out of 50 per unit. Use the HSC ATAR calculator to test your subject mix.

Study strategy
- Master the reference sheet. It is provided in the exam; know where each formula is and when to use it.
- Draw a diagram every time for trigonometry, bearings and scale problems.
- Write units and round sensibly. Money to the cent, lengths to a sensible accuracy.
- Practise financial maths with real numbers: a credit card statement, a car loan, depreciation of a first car.
- Do the common Standard 2 questions too. Past Standard 2 papers contain items common with Standard 1.
- Decide early about the exam. Talk to your teacher about whether sitting the optional exam helps your ATAR plans.
