What the Major Project is
The Major Project is an independent research project on an aspect of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, communities or experiences that interests you. It applies the research and inquiry methods taught in the course and is documented through a project log that records the sequential development of the work and any community-based fieldwork. The project gives you ownership of your learning and is where self-determination becomes a method, not just a topic.
Choosing a focus
A strong focus is specific, significant and researchable. It might examine a local community organisation, a cultural practice, a social justice issue, a person of significance, or a comparison. Avoid topics so broad they cannot be researched in depth, and avoid topics where you cannot access reliable or community-endorsed sources. The best projects connect to a community you can engage respectfully, often a local one.
Framing inquiry questions
Convert your focus into one main inquiry question and a few sub-questions. A good inquiry question is open, analytical and answerable with evidence you can realistically gather. For example, rather than asking whether a community is doing well, ask how a specific community-controlled organisation supports self-determination, and what its members identify as its strengths and challenges. The questions shape every later decision about methods and sources.
Selecting primary and secondary methods
Match methods to your questions. Primary methods give you original evidence: interviews and oral histories with community members, surveys, observation, and community-based fieldwork. Secondary methods give you context and triangulation: scholarly texts, government and community reports, statistics, media and archival material. Most strong projects combine both, using primary voices to ground the analysis and secondary sources to situate it.
Centring self-determination and respectful practice
Aboriginal protocols sit at the heart of planning. This means seeking permission appropriately, recognising that knowledge belongs to communities, respecting cultural sensitivities and the rights of Elders and knowledge holders, and giving back to the community involved. Indigenous data sovereignty, the principle that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have rights over data about them, should guide how you collect, store and represent information. Wherever possible, design the project with the community rather than about it.
Building a realistic timeline
Plan backwards from the due date. Allow time for ethics and permissions, for arranging and conducting fieldwork, for analysis, and for drafting and refining. Band 6 PLAN.
Thesis: Matching methods to focus and inquiry questions is of central importance to a Major Project, because a mismatch undermines both the validity of the findings and the ethical integrity of the research process, though a well-matched method set alone cannot compensate for a poorly framed focus.
Argument 1 - method choice determines whether the inquiry question can actually be answered. An inquiry question asking HOW a local program supports employment outcomes requires methods that can capture process and meaning (interviews, participant observation, case studies), not solely quantitative data; choosing only a survey with fixed-response questions would leave the "how" largely unanswered, producing a project with impressive-looking data that does not actually address its own question.
Argument 2 - method choice affects ethical and cultural appropriateness, not just data quality. Some inquiry questions (for example those touching cultural practice, ceremony or sensitive community history) require methods built around cultural protocol, such as yarning led by community members and fieldwork approved by Elders, rather than methods imported unchanged from other social science contexts; a mismatch here risks not just weak data but real cultural harm.
