What this dot point is asking

SCSA wants efficient, accurate identification of musical features from a short excerpt you have not seen before, using both the sound and the page. Because the recording plays only a set number of times, a system that targets one layer per listen is essential.

What you are identifying

The exam typically asks for some or all of:

  • The number of instruments or voices, and their type (strings, woodwind, brass, percussion, keyboard, voice types).
  • The clefs used and any instrument-specific notation (transposing parts, percussion notation, guitar tab or chord symbols).
  • The tempo (in words or a metronome range) and any tempo change.
  • The metre (simple or compound, duple, triple or quadruple) and time signature.
  • The key and tonality (major, minor, modal, pentatonic, blues or atonal).
  • The texture (monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic or heterophonic) and how it changes.

A listen-by-listen method

Plan what to extract on each playing rather than trying to hear everything at once:

  1. First listen: get the big picture. How many performers, what kind, what overall mood and tempo.
  2. Second listen: lock the metre and tempo. Conduct or tap to feel duple versus triple, simple versus compound.
  3. Third listen: key and tonality. Find the tonic, decide major or minor or modal, and note any modulation.
  4. Final listen: texture and detail. How the parts combine and where the texture thickens or thins, plus any expressive features.

Use the printed score between listens to confirm what you heard, reading the clef, key signature and instrument names.

Telling textures apart

Texture is the most commonly muddled feature:

  • Monophonic: a single melodic line, even if doubled at the octave.
  • Homophonic: a melody with chordal accompaniment that moves with it.
  • Polyphonic: two or more independent melodic lines woven together, as in a fugue or canon.
  • Heterophonic: a single melody performed with simultaneous variations, common in some world and folk styles.

Decide texture by asking how many genuinely independent lines there are, not how many instruments play.

Reading the page efficiently

The printed score is a second source of evidence that confirms or corrects what the ear hears, so use it deliberately. Scan the left of the first system for instrument names and clefs: treble, bass, alto (viola) and the octave-treble clef (tenor voice, guitar) each tell you the sounding range. Check the key signature on each stave separately, because a differing signature flags a transposing part. Read the time signature and any tempo or expression markings (allegro, dolce, pizzicato, con sordino) that name techniques you should then listen for. Dynamics and articulation printed in the score give you vocabulary to quote in the answer.

Building a usable evidence vocabulary

Markers reward precise terms anchored to features. Group your vocabulary by element so you can reach for it quickly: for instrumentation, name families and specific timbres (arco versus pizzicato strings, muted brass); for metre, simple or compound and duple, triple or quadruple; for tonality, major, minor, modal, pentatonic, blues or atonal; for texture, monophonic, homophonic, polyphonic or heterophonic. Keep a short note of any change, because the question often asks how a feature develops, for example a texture thinning to a single line at a phrase end or a modulation to the dominant.

Why this matters for the exam

This question rewards method over musical luck. A student who listens with a checklist and confirms against the score will identify metre, tonality and texture far more reliably than one who listens passively. The same observation skills feed directly into the longer analysis answers on designated and unseen works.

Answer each part with a label plus evidence, because the marking key gives a mark for the correct term and a mark for the justification.

(a) Instruments and voices: count the independent lines and name families. "Four performers: solo soprano voice, violin, cello and piano; identified by timbre and confirmed by the instrument names and clefs on the score." Naming the family (strings, keyboard, voice) is enough when the exact instrument is uncertain.

(b) Metre: tap the pulse and listen to how each beat divides. "The pulse groups in three and each beat divides into two, so simple triple, 3/43/4, confirmed by the printed time signature." If beats divide into three it would be compound.

(c) Key and tonality: find the tonic, then check major or minor. "One sharp and a final cadence resolving to E with a D sharp leading note indicate E minor (harmonic)." Quote the key signature and the cadence note.

(d) Texture: ask how many independent lines sound. "Homophonic: a single melody in the voice with chordal piano accompaniment moving in the same rhythm." Counting lines, not instruments, is what earns the mark.

Concert key from a transposing part: read the written key signature, then transpose by the interval the instrument sounds. "A part labelled in B flat (such as clarinet or trumpet) sounds a major second lower than written, so a written key of D major sounds in C major concert pitch." Always state the instrument's transposition and the direction before naming the concert key.

Targeting each playing rewards a plan rather than passive listening. Two features per listen: first listen, forces and overall mood; second listen, metre and tempo by tapping; third listen, key and tonality by finding the tonic; final listen, texture and expressive detail.

Markers reward the method: a candidate who assigns one or two targets to each playing captures metre, tonality and texture reliably, while a candidate listening for everything at once loses information to overload.
