What this dot point is asking
This dot point wants you to be able to define health and wellbeing, explain why it is described as dynamic and subjective, name and describe all five dimensions, and explain how those dimensions interrelate. It also asks you to discuss why optimal health and wellbeing is a resource for the individual, the nation and the world.
Health and wellbeing as a concept
In VCE HHD, health and wellbeing refers to the overall state of a person's physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual existence, characterised by an equilibrium in which the individual feels happy, healthy, capable and engaged. It is not simply the absence of disease - a person can be free of illness yet still have poor health and wellbeing.
The concept is dynamic because it constantly changes in response to our circumstances. A person's health and wellbeing can shift from hour to hour or year to year as factors such as stress, relationships, illness and environment change. It is subjective because each individual judges and experiences their own health and wellbeing differently based on personal values, expectations and standards. Two people in identical circumstances may rate their wellbeing very differently.
The five dimensions
Physical health and wellbeing relates to the functioning of the body and its systems. It includes the capacity to carry out daily tasks, fitness, healthy body weight, adequate energy, freedom from illness, and the proper working of body systems.
Social health and wellbeing relates to the ability to form meaningful and satisfying relationships and to manage or adapt to different social situations. It includes supportive networks of family and friends and effective communication.
Emotional health and wellbeing relates to the ability to recognise, understand and effectively manage emotions, and to express them in a positive and controlled way.
Mental health and wellbeing relates to the state of a person's mind and their ability to think and process information. It includes positive self-esteem, low levels of stress and anxiety, and the ability to use logic and reasoning.
Spiritual health and wellbeing relates to ideas, beliefs, values and ethics. It includes a sense of belonging, purpose, meaning, hope, peace and connection.
Optimal health and wellbeing as a resource
Optimal health and wellbeing is the highest level of health and wellbeing an individual can realistically attain. It acts as a resource at three levels:
- Individual: allows people to work, learn, build relationships and pursue goals, improving quality of life.
- National: a healthy population is more productive, places less strain on the health system, and contributes to a stronger economy through participation in the workforce.
- Global: healthy nations contribute to international trade, security, peace and development, and are better able to respond to global challenges such as pandemics.
When you write about these concepts in a SAC or the exam, define the dimension, give a relevant characteristic, and where the question allows, link dimensions together to show their dynamic and interrelated nature.
Exam-style practice questions

2025 VCAA5 marksa. Outline what is meant by social health and wellbeing and use an example to show how it can be dynamic. (3 marks)
b. Describe the relationship between the physical and mental dimensions of health and wellbeing, with reference to how each dimension has an impact on the other. (2 marks)
Show worked answer →
Part a (3 marks): Define social health and wellbeing as the ability to form meaningful, satisfying relationships and to manage or adapt appropriately to different social situations (1 mark). Give one example (1 mark), for instance having a supportive network of family and friends. Then show it is dynamic by explaining that it changes over time (1 mark), for example a person who moves to a new city loses their established friendship network and their social health and wellbeing declines until new relationships form.
Part b (2 marks): Explain a two-way relationship. One direction: strong physical health and wellbeing (high energy, no chronic pain) supports mental health and wellbeing by promoting positive self-esteem and a sense of optimism (1 mark). The reverse direction: poor mental health and wellbeing, such as depression, can reduce motivation to exercise and eat well, which lowers physical health and wellbeing (1 mark). Markers want each dimension shown affecting the other.
2023 VCAA5 marksa. What is 'illness'? (1 mark)
b. Using one example, explain the subjective nature of illness. (2 marks)
c. Identify one example of optimal physical health and wellbeing, and outline how this may influence one other dimension of health and wellbeing. (2 marks)
Show worked answer →
Part a (1 mark): Illness is a subjective concept referring to a person's individual experience or feeling of being unwell, which may or may not relate to the presence of disease.
Part b (2 marks): State that 'subjective' means it is based on personal feelings and perceptions and varies between individuals (1 mark). Give a worked example (1 mark): two people with the same head cold may experience it very differently, with one feeling too unwell to work while the other carries on as normal, because illness depends on personal interpretation.
Part c (2 marks): Identify one example of optimal physical health and wellbeing (1 mark), for example a healthy body weight and high fitness. Then outline how it influences another dimension (1 mark): being physically fit can improve mental health and wellbeing by boosting self-esteem and releasing endorphins that lift mood.
2022 VCAA4 marksPatrick is 67 and recently retired. He found it difficult to adjust, especially the lack of interaction with colleagues, and felt bored, which affected his health and wellbeing. Patrick joined the Australian Men's Shed Association, where men meet and work together on projects and discuss issues affecting their health and wellbeing.
Describe the interrelationship between two dimensions of Patrick's health and wellbeing.
Show worked answer →
For 4 marks, identify two dimensions and show each affecting the other in Patrick's context (2 marks per dimension with a clear link).
Social and mental are the easiest pair. Joining the Men's Shed gives Patrick regular social interaction and a sense of belonging, improving his social health and wellbeing (1 mark). This in turn lifts his mental health and wellbeing because the connection and shared purpose reduce his boredom and raise his self-esteem and sense of optimism (1 mark). Conversely, improved mental health and wellbeing (feeling less low) makes Patrick more willing to attend and engage socially, further strengthening his relationships (link back). Always tie the response to the stimulus about Patrick rather than answering generically.
