Exam-style practice (harder): Biology multiple choice
14 harder, exam-style VCE Biology Units 3 and 4 multiple-choice questions: enzyme and photosynthesis data, gel bands from a circular plasmid, PCR, immune responses, allele frequencies, molecular homology and key science skills. Each is tagged with its question type and every distractor explained. Original practice questions, not from any VCAA exam.

Why this set is harder than our topic quizzes
Our topic quizzes check definitions. The VCE Biology exam's multiple-choice section mostly gives you a table, graph, diagram or scenario and asks you to reason from it. The examination reports show that the questions students get wrong are usually the ones where a familiar idea appears in an unfamiliar context, or where a detail in the stem changes the answer.
These 14 questions follow that pattern. They are original practice questions written by ExamExplained, not taken from any VCAA examination. Every explanation starts with a Type tag and explains the misconception behind each wrong option, including several that VCAA reports have flagged.
Underline the details in the stem that change the answer: "circular", "random with respect to genotype", "no oxygen", "same cells". VCE Biology distractors are often correct statements about a slightly different situation.
The question types
| Type | What it looks like | Typical trap |
|---|---|---|
| Data interpretation | Enzyme rates, limiting factors, antibody levels, molecular differences, fossil layers | Reading one row instead of the pattern; concluding more than the data show |
| Concept application | Operon regulation, fermentation, CRISPR, immune responses, drift versus selection | A true statement about a different context (C4 instead of CAM, founder instead of bottleneck) |
| Calculation | Gel fragment sizes, PCR copy numbers | Treating a circular plasmid as linear; linear instead of exponential growth |
| Experimental design | Repeatability, reproducibility, accuracy, validity | Mixing up the key science skills terms |
Question map

Distinctions VCAA reports keep flagging
- Repressors bind the operator, not the promoter.
- Antibodies act outside cells. Infected cells are destroyed by cytotoxic T cells.
- Founder effect versus bottleneck effect. A new population started by a few individuals versus a crash in an existing population.
- Mutation creates new alleles; selection and drift change their frequencies.
- Use the context. Pre-learnt answers about a different example lose marks.
Assuming that the option with the most biology in it is correct. In stimulus questions, the right answer is the one the data support, and a statement can be true in general but unsupported by the table in front of you.
What to do next
- Practise Section B with Mark it yourself: VCE Biology, which shows how VCAA examination reports describe high-scoring answers.
- Revise the content in the Unit 3 deep dive and the Unit 4 deep dive.
- Then sit a full VCAA past examination and check each answer against the examination report.
