What you will study
First year introduces the foundations of education: child development and learning, the Australian Curriculum, classroom planning, and an introduction to teaching English, mathematics and the curriculum areas. You begin building professional skills and complete an early observation placement in a school. Middle years cover curriculum and pedagogy across all primary learning areas (English, mathematics, science, humanities, the arts, health and physical education, technologies), plus inclusive education, literacy and numeracy teaching, behaviour management and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander education. Placements lengthen and you take more responsibility for planning and teaching lessons. Final year focuses on classroom readiness: assessment and reporting, working with diverse learners, professional ethics and a final extended professional-experience placement. The program is AITSL accredited and, across the degree, includes more than 80 days of supervised placement. Before graduating you must pass the national literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education students (LANTITE). Graduates apply for registration with the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia (or the relevant state board).
