- First Australian university outside a capital city
What student life looks like
UNE was the first Australian university outside a capital city, established in Armidale in the New England tablelands on Anaiwan and Kamilaroi Country in 1954. The Armidale campus sits 6 kilometres west of the town centre on 75 hectares of parkland, with the Booloominbah heritage homestead, the Dixson Library and the Education Pavilion on site. UNE has been a national leader in distance education since the 1950s, and today the majority of its 23,000 students study online, with on-campus undergraduates a small minority. UNE Sydney runs as a satellite campus in Parramatta. Accommodation runs through eight on-campus residential colleges, including Earle Page College, Mary White, Robb, Wright, Drummond and Smith, with strong residential cohort traditions and inter- college sport. The University of New England Students' Association runs around 50 clubs. Most on-campus students live in the colleges or shared housing in central Armidale. The brand is flexible regional and online education with a particularly strong agriculture, rural science and education cohort, plus a joint medical programme with the University of Newcastle.
