Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)
at The University of Newcastle, New South Wales.
The University of Newcastle offers engineering as separate honours degrees, such as Civil, Chemical, Aerospace Systems, and Electrical and Electronic Engineering (Honours), at Callaghan. Ranks shown are for Civil Engineering; each degree publishes its own. Assumed knowledge is Mathematics Advanced (Band 5 or above).
Lowest selection rank
The lowest selection rank (LSR) is the lowest ATAR plus adjustment factors (equity, subject and regional bonuses) that received an offer to the UoN Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) for that intake. Universities publish it in their admissions student profiles. Only intakes with a published figure are listed.
| Intake | Lowest selection rank | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 2026 | 78.80 | uac.edu.au |
| 2024 | 68.20 | uac.edu.au |
| 2023 | 76.10 | uac.edu.au |
A lowest selection rank describes a past intake, not a guaranteed entry score. Check the current entry requirements on the official course page before you apply through UAC.
Prerequisite Year 12 subjects
No formal Year 12 subject prerequisites; assumed knowledge may still apply.
What you will study
Each engineering honours degree has its own structure. Civil engineering, for example, covers civil engineering materials, engineering management, fluid dynamics, geomechanics, steel and structural design, transportation and water engineering, with elective pathways. Mathematics Extension 1 and Chemistry and/or Physics are recommended. All engineering students complete 12 weeks of professional practice and 12 weeks of industrial experience.
Placement and industry experience
All University of Newcastle engineering students complete 12 weeks of professional practice and 12 weeks of industrial experience during their degree, building professional networks as well as practical skills.
Career outcomes
- Graduates work as professional engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical, mining and software roles after gaining Engineers Australia registration.

Is this the right degree for you?
You probably thrive here if
- Students who excelled in Year 12 maths (typically Extension 1 or Extension 2) and physics
- Those who enjoy building and problem solving in teams
- People aiming for chartered engineering status and a long technical career
- Students happy to do industry placement during summers
- Those willing to manage demanding workloads across four years
It is probably not for you if
- Students wanting a three-year degree with light maths
- Those who dislike laboratory and design-studio work
- Anyone uncomfortable with high contact hours (typically 22 to 28 per week)
