What you will study

First year introduces the breadth of psychology. You study introductory psychology across cognitive, developmental, social and biological domains, plus a foundational research-methods and statistics topic that runs alongside elective topics in areas such as sociology, biology or health. The emphasis is on understanding psychology as an empirical science. Second year builds the core APAC-accredited content. Topics cover cognition and perception, learning and behaviour, developmental and social psychology, personality and individual differences, and a heavier research-methods and statistics strand. You begin to read primary research and design simple studies. Third year completes the accredited sequence with advanced topics such as abnormal and clinical psychology, neuroscience and biological psychology, psychological assessment and applied psychology, plus an advanced research-methods topic. Flinders has well-regarded strengths in clinical and health psychology research. The three-year degree is the first half of the pathway to registration and does not by itself qualify you to practise as a psychologist.

After graduation

The three-year sequence is designed to lead into a fourth-year Honours or Graduate Diploma in Psychology (Advanced), which is required for entry to professional masters programmes. From there, registration as a psychologist with AHPRA requires a Master of Psychology (clinical, health, organisational or other endorsement) and supervised practice, a pathway of around six years in total. Graduates who do not pursue registration commonly move into human resources, market and user research, policy, or postgraduate study in counselling, social work or public health.

Is this the right degree for you?

You probably thrive here if

  • Students curious about why people think and behave as they do
  • Those comfortable with statistics and research methods
  • People prepared to study for several years toward registration
  • Careful readers of empirical research evidence
  • Students who enjoy writing structured scientific reports

It is probably not for you if

  • Those expecting to counsel clients after three years
  • Students who dislike statistics and quantitative methods
  • People wanting a vocational outcome immediately at graduation
  • Those uninterested in the scientific basis of behaviour
