Bachelor of Engineering (Honours)

at Deakin University, Victoria.

A four-year honours engineering degree with majors in civil, electrical and renewable energy, mechanical and mechatronics engineering, accredited by Engineers Australia at Geelong Waurn Ponds and online but not yet at Burwood (ranks shown are for Waurn Ponds; Burwood's 2026 figure was 70.40). VCE prerequisites are a study score of at least 20 in English other than EAL (or 25 in EAL) and at least 20 in any mathematics.

Lowest selection rank

The lowest selection rank (LSR) is the lowest ATAR plus adjustment factors (equity, subject and regional bonuses) that received an offer to the Deakin Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) for that intake. Universities publish it in their admissions student profiles. Only intakes with a published figure are listed.

What you will study

Majors are civil engineering, electrical and renewable energy engineering, mechanical engineering and mechatronics engineering. From first year students work on collaborative, project-based engineering challenges. Students complete 60 days of professional practice, alongside industry projects, capstone team projects and site visits.

Placement and industry experience

Students complete 60 days of professional practice and can take credit-bearing work-integrated learning placements.

Career outcomes

  • Graduates work as professional engineers in civil, mechanical, electrical, mining and software roles after gaining Engineers Australia registration.
  • Common destinations include consulting engineering firms (AECOM, Aurecon, Arup), infrastructure agencies and major mining and energy companies.
  • Many alumni move into project management, technology start-ups or graduate management programmes within five years.

Professional accreditation

  • Engineers Australia (Geelong Waurn Ponds and online; not yet accredited at Burwood)

Typical first jobs

  • Graduate civil or structural engineer at consulting firms (Aurecon, Arup, AECOM)
  • Graduate mechanical engineer at industrial or manufacturing employers
  • Graduate electrical or electronics engineer at AusNet, Powercor or transmission operators
  • Graduate software engineer at major tech companies or fintechs
  • Graduate mining engineer at BHP, Rio Tinto or Newcrest
  • Graduate environmental or water engineer at Melbourne Water or EPA
  • Graduate chemical engineer at Orica, Incitec Pivot or pharmaceuticals

Graduate starting salary

$72,000 - $90,000 per year

After graduation

Graduates of the accredited offerings are prepared for professional engineering practice, and high achievers can continue to a research degree or postgraduate coursework.

Is this the right degree for you?

You probably thrive here if

  • Students who liked specialist maths and physics in VCE
  • Problem-solvers who enjoy practical lab and design work
  • Patient team players willing to do group projects across all four years
  • Self-starters who chase summer engineering internships
  • Students who can keep going through hard maths courses

It is probably not for you if

  • Students who dislike maths or have not done methods/specialist and physics
  • People wanting a humanities-style course with light contact hours
  • Those who avoid group work and lab reports
  • Students unwilling to do industry placement during summer breaks
