What you will study

The CSU BCom builds a quantitative business core. Year one is fixed: introductory microeconomics and macroeconomics, financial and management accounting, business statistics or quantitative methods, marketing and management. From year two you choose a primary major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Banking, Business Analytics, Marketing, Management or International Business, and many students double-major. Year three is heavy on technical units (corporate finance, financial accounting, econometrics, tax, audit) and a capstone integrating analytics or strategy. Accounting and finance majors are mapped to the CA, CPA and CFA syllabi. Class sizes are larger than the BBus (300 plus in first-year lectures, tutorials of 25). Excel, Power BI and Python or R show up in analytics units from year two onwards.

After graduation

Top students enter the BCom Honours year (research thesis, typically 12,000 to 15,000 words) which is the standard pipeline into a Master of Research or PhD at CSU. Accounting majors stack the CA Program (Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand) or CPA Australia post-graduation. Finance majors typically pursue the CFA charter. Combined degrees with Laws, Advanced Studies, Computing and Science are widely taken. Postgraduate options include the Master of Commerce, Master of Finance, Master of Professional Accounting and Master of Business Analytics.

Is this the right degree for you?

You probably thrive here if

  • Students confident with maths, particularly Advanced or Mathematics Extension 1
  • Those targeting finance, banking, audit, tax or quantitative analytics roles
  • Students aiming for the CA, CPA or CFA credentialing pathway
  • People who enjoy working with structured numerical data
  • Networkers who target Sydney CBD finance and consulting employers

It is probably not for you if

  • Students who hated Year 12 maths and want a numerate-light degree (consider a BBus or BA)
  • Those wanting a creative-led business curriculum
  • Anyone uncomfortable with high-stakes exam-weighted units
