What student life looks like
The Acton campus sits a 15-minute walk from Canberra's parliamentary triangle, with Lake Burley Griffin to the south and Black Mountain to the west. Compared to other Group of Eight unis, ANU is small, with a tight cohort of around 20,000 students, and almost half of undergraduates live on campus. Accommodation runs through Bruce Hall, Burton and Garran, Burgmann College, John XXIII College, Ursula Hall, Fenner Hall, Wright Hall, Wamburun and Yukeembruk, giving ANU one of the highest residential ratios of any Australian uni. The ANU Students' Association and the Postgraduate and Research Students' Association run more than 130 clubs, and the Kambri precinct is the centre of campus food, retail and event life. Most students travel by foot, bike or the light rail along Northbourne Avenue. Semester one runs late February to late May and semester two late July to late October, with the Bushweek orientation a notable tradition. The town is dominated by federal public service and embassy life, which feeds into a strong policy, international relations and law culture.
