Quick questions on Reciprocal functions - TCE Mathematics Specialised (Tasmania)

1short Q&A pairs drawn directly from our worked dot-point answer. For full context and worked exam questions, read the parent dot-point page.

What is behaviour near a zero of f?
Show answer
The single most important detail when sketching a reciprocal is the direction of the vertical asymptote at each zero of ff. Read the sign of ff on each side of the zero. If ff changes from positive to negative through the zero (a simple crossing with negative gradient), then 1f\dfrac{1}{f} goes from ++\infty down to -\infty across the asymptote. If ff only touches the axis (a repeated root, so ff does not change sign), the reciprocal shoots to the same infinity on both sides.
