What you will learn

The TAE40122 is the minimum credential required to deliver and assess nationally recognised vocational education and training under the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015 administered by ASQA. Core units include designing learning programs, planning and delivering group-based learning, planning and delivering individual learning, conducting assessment in compliance with the principles of assessment and rules of evidence, participating in assessment validation, and addressing adult language, literacy and numeracy needs. The qualification was updated in 2022 with strengthened LLN units and assessment validation requirements.

How the course runs

Most students study online or blended over 6 to 12 months. Around 240 to 360 hours of formal training, with theory and practical roughly 60/40. The practical components include delivering a real training session and conducting real assessments under supervision. Most enrolees already work in vocational training, industry mentoring or industry training roles.

Workplace and placement

No mandatory work placement, but the practical units require access to real learners and assessees. Most students are concurrently employed as a workplace trainer, supervisor or assessor, or have access to a vocational learner group through their employer or industry network. Wages depend on the host industry and role - VET teacher salaries follow the Educational Services (Post-Secondary Education) Award or state TAFE enterprise agreements.

After you finish

After Cert IV you can pursue the Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (TAE50122) for senior trainer, learning design and quality assurance roles, or the Diploma of Training Design and Development (TAE50216). Master of Education (Vocational) and Master of Adult Learning programs at La Trobe, UTS, Charles Sturt and others offer postgraduate pathways. Many trainers become subject-matter experts for course development and quality audits.
