What is the least-squares regression line?
Show answer
The least-squares line is the straight line that minimises the sum of the squared vertical distances (residuals) between the data points and the line. In General Mathematics you read its coefficients off CAS after entering the paired data. The line is written
What is prediction?
Show answer
Substituting an xx value into the equation gives a prediction y^\hat{y}.
What is coefficient of determination as a fit measure?
Show answer
The coefficient of determination r2r^2 is the proportion of the variation in the response variable explained by the linear model. A value close to 11 means the line explains most of the variation; a value near 00 means it explains little. Always quote r2r^2 as a percentage in context alongside the residual plot, because the two together tell you whether the model is trustworthy.
