10 highest scaling QCE subjects in 2026 (with QTAC data)

This list ranks the top 10 QCE General subjects by QTAC scaling offset. Scaling offset is the change applied to your subject result (combined IA1, IA2, IA3, and EA marks out of 100) before it contributes to your ATAR aggregate.

Important: QCE only counts your top 5 General subject scaled scores for ATAR. Applied subjects (including Essential English and Essential Maths) satisfy QCE certificate requirements but generally do not count for ATAR.

1. Specialist Mathematics : ~+9 offset

The highest-scaling QCE General subject most years. Specialist scales subject results up by approximately 9 points. A subject result of 80 typically becomes ~89 after scaling.

The cohort is small (around 3,500 students in Queensland) and academically exceptional. Specialist is taken alongside Mathematical Methods at most schools.

2. Mathematical Methods : ~+5 offset

The standard university-track QCE maths. Methods scales subject results up by approximately 5 points. A subject result of 80 becomes ~85.

The cohort is large (~12,000 students). Methods is required or strongly recommended for engineering, science, commerce, and most STEM university pathways.

3. Music Extension : ~+4 offset

Music Extension scales solidly because the cohort is small and self-selecting. Students complete a substantial extended major work alongside Music.

4. Chinese (Mandarin) : ~+3-5 offset

Chinese Mandarin Continuers scales among the higher languages. Cohort is small. The exam requires fluent character recognition and cultural context.

5. Physics : ~+4 offset

QCE Physics scales up by approximately 4 points. The cohort is academically strong. Multi-step problem solving and conceptual explanation are tested across IAs and the EA.

6. Chemistry : ~+4 offset

QCE Chemistry scales similarly to Physics. Strong cohort. Calculations, equations, and organic chemistry are tested across the IAs and EA.

7. Philosophy and Reason : ~+2 offset

QCE Philosophy and Reason scales slightly above neutral. Smaller cohort with strong analytical writing ability.

8. Literature : ~+2 offset

QCE Literature (the more specialised English subject) scales slightly higher than English. Cohort is small.

9. Engineering : ~0 offset (neutral)

QCE Engineering scales roughly neutrally. Cohort is mid-sized and increasingly capable as the subject matures.

10. Economics : ~+2 offset

QCE Economics scales slightly higher than other social sciences. Cohort is mid-sized and includes many students aiming at commerce or economics degrees.

What QCE scaling does to your ATAR

Your QCE ATAR aggregate sums your top 5 General subject scaled scores, maxing out at 500. A subject that scales to 90 contributes 90 to your aggregate; one that scales to 75 contributes 75. Across 5 subjects, a high-scaling combination can produce 50+ aggregate points more than a low-scaling combination. That is the difference between an ATAR of 85 and 95.

But: scaling only helps if you score competitively in the subject. The right strategy is "take the highest-scaling subjects you can sustain at subject result 70+."

1. Identify high-scaling subjects you could realistically do at subject result 70+.
2. Map prerequisites against your target university courses.
3. Include General English (or Literature/EAL) as your literacy-required subject.
4. For your remaining subjects, prioritise interest plus scaling.
