Unit 3: Measurement, scales and chance
Module overview →Scales, plans and models
Identify right-angled triangles in practical situations and use Pythagoras' theorem to find an unknown side length, including ladders, ramps, roofs, diagonals and checking for square corners
Scales, plans and models
Interpret and use scales written as ratios and scale factors, calculate actual and scaled lengths, read house plans and maps, and create simple scale drawings and models
Chance: probability and relative frequencies
Describe the likelihood of events using the language of chance and the probability scale from 0 to 1, list sample spaces, calculate theoretical probabilities, and use relative frequencies from experiments and data to estimate probabilities and expected numbers of outcomes
Measurement
Calculate perimeters and areas of common shapes (rectangles, triangles, parallelograms, trapeziums, circles) and composite shapes, convert units of area, and apply them to practical problems such as flooring, fencing and painting
Measurement
Use metric units of length, mass and capacity, convert between them, choose appropriate units and levels of accuracy, and calculate with measurements in practical contexts
Measurement
Calculate the volume and capacity of prisms, cylinders and composite solids, convert between cubic units and units of capacity, and solve practical problems involving containers, tanks, concrete and packaging
Unit 4: Graphs, data and loans
Module overview →Bivariate graphs
Construct and interpret scatterplots of two numerical variables, identify the explanatory and response variables, describe the form, direction and strength of an association, draw a line of best fit by eye, and use it to make and judge predictions
Summarising and comparing data
Calculate and interpret the mean, median, mode and range of a data set, identify outliers and their effect, display and compare two or more data sets using back-to-back stem plots, dot plots and column graphs, and make decisions supported by the data
Loans and compound interest
Calculate simple and compound interest, use the compound interest formula and tables or spreadsheets, compare loan and credit options including personal loans, car loans and credit cards, and calculate the total cost of a loan including interest and fees
