What this paper assessed

The QCAA Biology external assessment (Paper, 60 marks) covers Units 3 and 4 of the senior syllabus and is the final 50% summative external. The 2025 paper drew on:

  • Unit 3 - Biodiversity and the interconnectedness of life: describing biodiversity, classification and phylogeny, populations and their dynamics, and ecosystem functioning and change (including population growth models and species interactions).
  • Unit 4 - Heredity and continuity of life: DNA structure and replication, gene expression (transcription and translation), inheritance and patterns of gene expression, the relationship between genotype and phenotype, and continuity of species through reproduction, mutation and natural selection.

The exam mixes multiple choice with short response, and rewards precise terminology, clear cause-and-effect chains, and the ability to read an unfamiliar diagram, graph or dataset and apply syllabus principles. QCAA cognitions tested include describe, explain, analyse, interpret and evaluate, so the command word governs how much reasoning each item demands.

Structure and timing

The paper is 60 marks in 120 minutes (plus 5 minutes perusal) - exactly 2 minutes per mark.

  • Multiple choice section: allow about 1 minute per mark here to bank time (typically 15-20 short objective marks).
  • Short-response section: spend the remaining time at roughly 2-2.5 min per mark, with the longest analyse/evaluate items getting a 1-2 minute plan.

Use perusal to scan for the data-interpretation items so you start processing graphs early. A workable split: bank the multiple choice quickly, then protect 8-10 minutes at the end to check that every "explain" and "evaluate" item actually contains reasoning, not just a statement.

Worked practice questions (exam-style)

Common errors students made

The 2025 QCAA marker report flagged that students confused antigen and antibody, mixed up transcription and translation steps, and gave conclusion statements that ignored the data shown; many also failed to identify the independent and dependent variables in experimental questions. Further recurring traps:

  • Describing when the command word says explain or analyse, so a reasoning-heavy item earns only the description marks.
  • Treating evolution as something an individual does, rather than a change in allele frequency across a population.
  • Quoting textbook values instead of the stimulus data when a graph or table is provided - always cite the actual trend or figure.
  • Vague conclusions that do not state whether the data support or refute the hypothesis, or that ignore reliability and validity.

How to use this paper

Sit the paper in 120 minutes under exam conditions, then mark strictly against the official marking guide and marker report at the QCAA links in the frontmatter, noting how marks are tiered for analyse and evaluate items. Rebuild every short-response item that scored below 60%, this time underlining the command word and writing a one-line plan first. Keep a personal vocabulary log of terms you misuse (antigen/antibody, transcription/translation, mitosis/meiosis, genotype/phenotype) and re-test yourself on that list weekly until it is automatic.

Use this paper well

  1. Sit the paper under exam conditions (120 minutes, 60 marks).
  2. Mark yourself against the official QCAA marking notes.
  3. Compare against the Biology hub to find the syllabus dot points this paper tested.
