What this paper assessed

Paper 1 examines the Common Module: Texts and Human Experiences. Section 1 is unseen short answer (20 marks). Section 2 is one essay on the prescribed text (20 marks). The 2021 paper sat under exam conditions that were rolled forward from the 2020 disruption, but the rubric was unchanged.

Section 1 strategy

The unseen suite covered prose, poetry and a visual text. Markers rewarded responses that named the form of each text precisely, identified one or two well-chosen techniques, and linked those techniques to a specific human experience or emotion. Generic technique lists scored poorly. Budget 40 minutes total, with the long-response question taking around 15 minutes.

Section 2 strategy

The essay prompt asked students to discuss how the prescribed text invites the reader to think about the relationship between memory and human experience. High-band answers held the noun "memory" in view across every paragraph rather than drifting into a generic human-experience essay. Plan two or three structural moments in the prescribed text before you begin writing.

Common errors to avoid

Markers flagged prepared essays bolted onto the prompt. Markers flagged Section 1 answers that listed five techniques in a sentence and then moved on. Markers flagged plot summary in Section 2.
