Quick questions on Sport in the media in HSC English Studies

3short Q&A pairs drawn directly from our worked dot-point answer. For full context and worked exam questions, read the parent dot-point page.

What is reading sports media critically?
Show answer
To read critically is to notice that a report is a point of view, not the truth of the match. A report written for one team's home city frames the result differently from a report in the rival city. A headline may exaggerate to sell. None of this makes the media dishonest; it makes it a constructed text with a purpose.
What is match the command word to the depth required?
Show answer
"Identify" wants the technique named; "analyse" wants technique plus quoted evidence plus effect; "evaluate" or an extended response wants several techniques developed together with a judgement about how constructed the text is.
What is write your own tiny example if none is given?
Show answer
If a question is generic, invent one short original headline or line of commentary to demonstrate a technique precisely - this is safer than vaguely describing a technique with no evidence.
