HSC minimum standard: attempts and when students sit
Year 10 and 11 students can sit each test up to 4 times a year and Year 12 students up to 6, at least 30 calendar days apart in the same area. Testing times are arranged by schools, so ask yours.
Last checked against the official sources.
Up to 4 attempts a year in Years 10 and 11, up to 6 in Year 12, with at least 30 calendar days between attempts in the same area.
The rules
NESA's attempts rules apply to each area separately, so reading, writing and numeracy each have their own count.
- Year 10 or 11: up to 4 times per year.
- Year 12: up to 6 times per year.
- Gap: at least 30 calendar days after the last attempt in the same area.
- Time limit: from Year 10 until up to 5 years after starting the first HSC course.
NESA says these rules apply to entries from 3 April 2023. Students who have already met Level 3 in an area cannot retake it unless they are leaving school.
When do students sit
NESA's pages do not list testing dates for students at school. It says your school helps decide when a student is ready and may run a test for a group of students or for one student, so ask the school for your child's dates.
For students who have left school, NESA's page on applying to sit the tests says HSC minimum standard testing will be conducted from 16 February to 27 November 2026. NESA has not published 2027 dates on that page. Please check NESA for any update.
Plan the gaps. If a student sits writing and wants another try, the next attempt cannot be sooner than 30 calendar days later.
After school
NESA says students who leave school can apply to sit the tests once they have completed all of the other HSC requirements. There is no cost, and the form must be submitted at least 21 days before the student wants to sit the tests. See NESA's application page for the process.
For parents
Reassure your child that more than one attempt is built into the system. See also the overview.
Details come from NESA's minimum standard pages. Please confirm them with NESA and your school.
