Definition
Chord and cadence aural recognition in VCE Music
Define Chord quality
Chord quality is the character of a chord created by its intervals: major (bright), minor (dark), dominant seventh (bright but tense and wanting to resolve), and diminished (very tense). In aural work you identify quality from this colour rather than by counting written intervals.
Definition
Analysing music using elements and concepts in VCE Music
Define core elements of music
The core elements of music are pitch (melody and harmony), rhythm and metre, tempo, dynamics (loudness), articulation (how notes are attacked and joined), tone colour or timbre (the quality of a sound), texture (how many layers and how they combine) and structure (how sections are organised).
Definition

Comparing interpretations and performances in VCE Music
Define performance decision
A performance decision is a choice a performer makes that is not fully fixed by the notation: the exact tempo and whether it fluctuates, the precise dynamic shaping, the articulation and attack, the use of rubato and expressive timing, the tone colour and vibrato, and any ornamentation or improvisation.
Definition
Key signatures and the circle of fifths in VCE Music

Melodic transcription and aural skills in VCE Music
Define scale degree
A scale degree is a note's numbered position in the key: 1 is the tonic, 5 is the dominant, 7 is the leading note, and so on. Hearing "this note is the third of the key" is faster and more reliable than measuring every interval from the previous note.
